Mazinger series - Mikene Warrior Beasts Barubari and Obelius
Mammalian Warrior Beast Barubari and Aerial Warrior Beast Obelius were first introduced on Episode one of the Great Mazinger Anime and were the first duo of the series, and the 2nd Warrior Beast duo overall after Pilanias and Gratonios in the Mazinger Z finale.
Barubari was an ape like creature, with Maroon fur, a red face and a gray color chest, a metallic jaw with sharp teeth, his forearms and lower legs were covered in armor, and a mace for a left hand. Beside his maze, he had considerable brute strength and could fire missiles from the mouth. His real face, ape-like, was located in his chest. Barubari seem to have the ability to heal on occasion (although this could be categorize as animation error).
As for Obelius, he had a Pteranodon aspect to it – with long gray color beak with a spike coming out of the top and large wings, a small yellow neck, a round body with three missile launchers in the stomach, four brown limbs with four digits each and a white mane, with his real humanoid yellow head with red hair coming out of it. Beside missile, sharp talons and his flight capabilities, Obelius arsenal included a Heat Beat, Fire Breath, Sonic Waves, and could launch itself as spinning missile, capable of tear its enemies through with its long sharp beak.
Both Warrior Beasts were presented to the Great General of Darkness, demonstrating their abilities, by Generals Ligern and Birdler and are cast off to fight Great on the Mikelos Fortress, while Gorgon's Spies erroneously confuse Borot (on it's many escapes to fly) for Great – HOW? - and report their findings to base. As Shiro rides with Nuke and Mucha through the woods, they encounter Barubari and captures Shiro, Borot tries to save him, but the Beast shoves him away. Gorgon arrives and tries to force the information of Great's whereabouts by having Barubari “eat” Shiro. As Dr. Kabuto sees the developments on screen, Jun takes Tetsuya's battle motorcycle, and with the help of the Boss Borot, rescues Shiro and takes him to safety. Gorgon sends Obelius after them, but Borot jumps in the middle of the attack and is taken by the Warrior Beast and proceed to beat him, allowing Jun and Shiro to escape and Tetsuya launches Great Mazinger as the Science Fortress submerges from sight, and the fight ensues.
At first both Beast seem to have the upper hand, but briefly, as Great scars Obelius humanoid head with the Great Boomerang, he grabs him and guides onto Barubari, stabbing him in the back, not killing it thought. As Obelius takes off, Great discharges its Thunder Break on to it, then cuts part of Obelius wing with the Great Sword. As Barubari stands up for a sneak attack, Great impales it with the Sword and Obelius launches itself for a final spin attack – Great jumps out of the way as Obelius impales Barubari, both Beast fall and explode. Afterwards Great fights the Mikelos fortress, briefly, and the ship retreats. The Great General makes a vow to use the might of the Seven Armies to destroy Great Mazinger at any cost.
Barubari was only featured one other time in the franchise, in the Shin Mazinger Zero manga led by the Great General, while Obelius has appeared in Shin Mazinger Zero, Mazinkaiser vs the Great General (with Birdler, Birdian and Orbee, before they were all dispatch by Millennium Alpha) and was one of the few Warrior Beasts to have a girl counterpart in the comedy series Robot Girls.
