I recently found a disk containing some of my old art from around 2010 or so. One of the last projects I worked on with my Australian friend Bernard was a series of illustrations for his story "Briar Patch." A tale about a deep space station getting raided by a gang of space pirates. Here, the Kanawa's Pride space freighter lifts off from the spaceport with a few new crewmembers and a load of valuable cargo intended for installation on the new station.

I'm kind of half tempted to try and re-render the image in color if I can find the original line art. Alas! The original scans I fear were in a 20 year old hard drive that I was encouraged to hammer a nail through. The fellow advising me to destroy the HD told me that there was a very slim chance most modern OS-ses could even understand the properties of Windows 4.
Mer-HAwwwww... Man was HE wrong. Is it possible that you may print out the existing B&W file then trace it? Only NASA and the Government have been stupid enough to throw away OS's like that, witness NASA hunting someone who could read old tapes. In your case the best bet is to print out as large as you can (say with an EXCEL style program) and trace. Best of luck.
Yeah. Look up "The Briar Patch" On Bernard's Chakats Den website, or the collected "Tales of the Foxtaur Clans" book if you can find it.
A Long, Long time ago, I read someplace that Larry Niven, I believe, liked giving the spaceships he'd write of complicated names like the Clarence B. Doubleday and such, which I thought was pretty "Novel" until I started reading the names of freighters plying the great lakes and of course all those Liberty and Victory ships.
Most of those vessels were named after historic Merchantmen, or Naval War heroes. The ship I can think of with a name from Indigenous people is the derelict "S. S. Wapama" a lumber carrying schooner on display in the Shipyards in Richmond CA.
I believe it would be nice to see a vessel named "Chief Joseph" somewhere.

Heh. Yeah. I actually picked up that multiple mast idea from a few space ship designs from Japanese anime I've seen over the years. I believe one of my "Bolo" Continental Siege Machines has such a set up as well.

I believe I still have a copy of "MAATC" which was a spin off of the "Bolo" RPG somewhere in storage.

I figure there will always be an advantage with armored vehicles. Of course most of the tank drivers I've chatted with feel that smaller and faster is better, I imagine if the need ever arises, there might be a way for some type of moving armored fortress. Most heavy tanks, especially those built in the 1930s and 1940s proved unwieldy and served better as rolling roadblocks.
Still. Yeah... I imagine if I was the leader of a group of individuals who were bunkered in some sort of makeshift fortress built in the ruins of a city, and I saw a huge, rumbling war machine headed my way, I believe I'd stop negotiations and retreat to a safer place.

I'm always intrigued by illustrations like this. It raises questions for me, like whether the dock is capable of accommodating a variety of ships, or if it is purpose-built for this specific design (or whether it's something like "Panamax ships" that all designs have to comply with)
I really didn't put much technical thought into the design of the cradle to tell you the truth. My original design had the freighter looking more like a Trilobite, and it was taking off from the ground. (As all good spaceship designs should.) Bernard had me re-read the story, so I improvised the launching cradle to compliment the massive space freighter. It could be said that the cradle is designed only to handle that class of freighter, which could mean the spacecraft in those stories have a "Standard" style of hull which fits onto those surfaces.
It's kind of fun for me to ponder how to make the design even more feasible in figuring out how the cradle looks retracted into the ground, and with all the doors and loading ramps secured onto the vessel. I kind of like the idea that the wedge shaped structures on either side of the cradle cover retractable ramps that lead to underground freight handling facilities. ...Just a guess.

Nothing wrong with "Eyeball Engineering" at all. Most of my complex drawings were done by "Making it look right." I kinda wish I had learned to weld and run simple machine tools as it would broaden my working skills, but there are so many metal sculptures in my head that I'd like to build.
Not only that, but I have all sorts of blueprints and drawings for miniature, steam powered engines that look like they'd be fun to build. They would also help clear up some mysteries in my head about how they operated.

Well it's never to late to learn something new. Look around for a tech school and take some classes. Just about everything I learned in high school shop I have used and still use. Running a lathe and mill came by the way of learning on the job. I did take a machine shop class in high school so that did start my interest in running them.
I definitely SHOULD look into that. I cut my "Teeth" in a junior high Shop class, and most importantly learned how to work safely, and avoid costly mistakes. I turned towards drafting and tech illustrating in High School and then finalized in being a designer in College. Only after I graduated and discovered the Comics fandom in the mid 1980s, I decided to become a cartoonist. So yeah. I really want to try new things now. I want to build things, and not leave behind a monument to my existence made of paper.
I fully understand... Because of my varied job background I see things I helped make 40 years ago still in use... The fishing boat Shinaku that I helped Dad build back in 1973/74 is still fishing in Alaska. I go down to Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle and I see a number of the boats that I worked on when I was working at a boat shop in Seattle. Then there are all the Genie lifts that I built... every now and then I go up to an old lift and look for my weld stamp and many times I find it
Adding the large, dark spaces really gave the ship a sense of "Mass" and scale. The story's text said that the ship used an anti gravity drive to lift off from the surface of the planet, so I tried to interpret that into the image. The extra clouds of dust were just added for dramatic effect.
I believe I posted the original "Trilobite" design for the "Pride" years ago, but Bernard didn't like the drawing. If I recall correctly, the image was lost in the big Data Dump a few years ago. Anyway, after these past seven years, I just noticed the design still resembles a Trilobite. ...One of the earlier, stockier ones.
I used to love those old Sci Fi themed comics like Fusion, Varcel's Vixens Bucky O'Hare or even Captain Jack and I wonder if there's more comics out there that have mainly anthropomorphic animal characters in outer space adventures? On my average visit to the Comics Factory in Pasadena, the rags carrying stories featuring 'Morphs are sexually related and feature pin ups mainly. It might be a good idea to dust off a few of my old sketches, clean and ink them up, then post them here on FA to see what the folks here on FA think.
I know people put out some good quality anthro stuff still, but most that I see is Fantasy related instead (including most of my own, I admit).
Far too much is sexual though. I love it when people say, "It's not about the sex!" when two-thirds of their submissions/faves are all NSFW. Sure, fur, it's not about the sex. *squeak!*

Now are you, or your character saying "Sure, Fur..." with the arms akimbo, in a "Yeah Right" posture? I know, I know. I just got through responding with another "Furry" artist who asked me why I never fave any of the works displayed on that page which show the characters engaged in messy sex, showing all the "goodies" in action. I have yet to reply, because half of me wants to say that "I'm sick of that stuff", while the other half says "Because it lacks imagination." Still, there's a few artists here on FA who can combine sex and humor, but they're few and far between. Anyway, Yeah. I like the Sext art that's done with a sense of good taste, and perhaps a little respect for the subject depicted.
