I got the idea from US Navy Pilots who'd decorate their flight helmets with various bits of reflective, colored adhesive tape. Not only did each helmet look great personalized, but they also seemed to glow in the dark when light was shined on them.
...And yes. If you look closely, the Pirate with the eyeglasses on his helmet is also wearing eyeglasses behind his helmet visor. His helmet also has "Whiskers" too. A little Homage to my character "Mr. Foxy" which I snuck in there.

Also it's intended to intimidate the Pirate's victims, and keep the Pirate crew from shooting each other by mistake. It's kind of fun to come up with the designs too as I have no idea what creatures on the Voxxan planet are intimidating. The Buccaneer wearing tape that makes his helmet look like a Bunny? He's possibly the worst of the lot!
I read a book a LONG time ago by Ben Bova when he was editing Omni Magazine called "How to write Science Fiction" and the one point he kept stressing over and over again was that readers find Science Fiction stories more interesting if they're about People. (Italics.) So I must say that I find the idea of Triceratops "People" fascinating, and it makes me curious as to how they live their lives, make things, communicate, and interact with each other on their world. But yes. This raises SO MANY questions. What's the planet like? How different is it from ours? Are there things these People can do that makes them different than us? Do they want to be like us, or would they prefer to remain as they are? What is the level of their technology? Questions like these always pass through my mind when I write of the creatures in my stories, and every answer often generates even more questions. I like to believe your characters can look up at the night time sky from their world and think, "I wonder if there's someone out there watching us?" That is always a good start for a story.
Sorry... I tend to rattle on if I get on a subject I find interesting.
