During the height of the re-take over of the station one of the fist casualties on the side of the Voxxans was one Pirate who was caught threatening a nursery full of cubs. It was most likely too late for this fellow to learn that even with the Stellar Foxtaurs it's NEVER a good idea to threaten their young.

Well, I mean what I say. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9069983/ Those fangs are not for show. Razorsharp and attached to a jaw that is strong enough to break bones. So yeah, a bite in the back, a short crack and the dude would not even have had time to scream for help.
I kind of feel bad that Bernard wrote this unfortunate Pirate out in the story, because there's so much humor potential to him. As far as I know only Captain Kaldarr and his former Helmsman Asinok survived the ordeal.

I just scribbled the rough up with what I thought the characters might look like if they were rendered in a more cartoony style. So I couldn't resist adding the little pain stars instead of slit pupils in the Voxxan Pirate's eyes for a little touch of humor.
And it offsets the tears and terror in the little cub's eyes. It makes the offending Tod look like he deserves to get whacked in the head.

Uh... It's actually the handle end of a prying tool, which can make an effective, metal club. Surprisingly, "Belay" and the term "Belaying" is still used in the Modern Navy, although I've noticed some new ships are lacking masts and rigging.
Anyway, I shoulda added some indications to make the club look more metallic. The drawing was a quickly dashed off cartoon for a start, and I'm happy that Bernard liked it so much, he worked the scene into the story.
You're not silly. Just blessed with a keen eye for detail and a wry sense of humor.

The phrase "Belay that!" has been used by most English-speaking navies and Merchants Marine to mean, "Stop doing/saying what you're doing." The actual purpose of the belaying pin was to loop and secure ropes to keep them in place, but the shape also made for a handy, if impromptu billy club.
I worked as a contract guard at a U.S. Navy research base for a couple of years; one of the base officers had a lovely bronze belaying pin on the windowsill next to his desk. Pressed into service as a weapon, it would certainly make an impression on a boarder's mind...
