Familiar; a snake and wizard. Chapter 1 (download and text)
I will improve this and the other chapters over time.
This is mostly me writing whatever comes to mind and not being afraid to post it.
The main characters so far are a magically made serpent and his master and teacher.
---
Hidden away in a castle, the dragon wizard worked his magic. Young, powerful, and eager; the long, exotic looking sorcerer worked a spell into the large, azure-glowing circle of runes in an a coiled serpent motif. His circling and gesturing claws form the air into a bright cyclone at the center of the room.
"Let the breath of life fill him with magic."
The stone room fills with a steadily growing breeze, warmed to the heat of a tropical storm as the air condenses to the middle of the lab.
The wind is enough to pull on the runes at the circles edge, guiding the whole magical alphabet along the serpentine shape.
"Let him have form from the earth itself ."
The magic circle shrinks in on itself as the lines become more organic, A blue outline rising up into the shape of a coiled snake. The semi-solid figure starts to coil over itself, pulling from the castle's stone to give itself mass, looking less rocky by the moment. It is as if a clay figure is being sculpted by invisible hands.
"Let him have a life full of learning and love."
The color changes from grey to almost black, newly formed nostrils taking their first breath appear. The shape's throat and sides fill with air, gasping in an almost whine to expel and inhale.
The long, draconic wizard approaches, around the same size as his creation. One of his front paws gently strokes the newly formed being, the snake's scales shifting to a more brown and black pattern instead of the sheen of un-grounded energy. His back and sides are permanently marked with runes down to the bone and muscle, from neck to tail tip, individual scales are formed in detail.
"As part of me, let him learn to be more." His paw brushes from that nose to between the eyes ,"let him know the love and voice of his master and teacher," The wizard's movement and incantation leave a mark in the shape of an "I" across the face before him, a symbol of activation and autonomy left as a tan streak that fades. "so he can grow to be more than my servant. For to create someone who is a part of me, they cannot be less."
That face rises up to greet his creator, accepting of the spell and who created him, fully formed and settled into place as that nose presses to the figure full of warmth and magic.Unlike a truly wild snake's unblinking gaze, the serpent's cloudy eyes, more advanced than the unblinking ones of his feral counterparts. The wizard grins, embracing the snake's head as the residual magic of the spell is grounded.
Sounding less lonely and more hopeful, the dragon rest his forehead against that of his creation as he replies. "welcome to the world, my friend."
The familiar currently just yawns and stretches before settling into a happy sleep.
The eyes remain closed, but the serpent's nose presses up to the dragon's chest, full of the warmth of magic, and noses back, the wizard grinning as he rest against the young and sleeping being, hugging that large head, ready to work the rest of the magic over the next few stages after resting himself. "Welcome to the world, my friend." His voice is hopeful and less lonely, the magic snake simply bumping his nose against his master's with a yawn.
