Nixie or nacken are shapeshifting river sprites or lake spirits known to most often take the the shape of beautiful men by the riverbed. Often found covered in lakeweed or the river snares by the riverbed, nixies bear some resemblance to other forest fae found by the waterside. The Scandinavian näcken, nixie, nøkk were a type of water sprite who played enchanting songs on the violin, luring women and children to drown in the lakes they occupied.

However, not all of these spirits were necessarily malevolent; in fact, many stories exist that indicate that nixie were entirely harmless to their audience and attracted not only women and children, but men as well with their sweet and beautiful songs. Stories also exist where more than one of these fae agreed to live with a human who had fallen in love with them, but many of these stories ended with the nixie returning to his home, usually a nearby waterfall or brook out of deep homesickness.

It is said that if you appeal to a nixie by approaching them with offerings they will teach you how to play their enchanting ethereal song. Offerings usually consisted of dropping into the water: three drops of blood, a black animal, and Scandinavion vodka or wet snuff.
