Kira hummed to herself as she followed behind a small gathering of people on a community hike through the woods. She relished the still warm, midday sun of early fall and the slowly changing colors of the leaves. The others had broken off into smaller groups and began chatting with one another as they all meandered down the well-worn and very easy path, blissfully unaware that the whole group was being stalked by a certain, unseen cat.
Kylie, one of the organizers of the hike, padded along just ahead of Kira, keeping an eye on the group and glancing back the feline. The opossum made sure she didn’t stray too far behind whenever Kira found herself distracted. “Nice day for it, eh?” he asked, trying to start up a conversation.
The feline’s ears twitched a bit as she caught, his slight Louisianan accent. “Mhm! It certainly is! I love how the trees look this time of year!” she replied, looking back up at the greenish-yellow leaves. She picked up her pace to catch up, giving a pleasant smile.
“Agreed, though I must admit I’m more of a Spring guy myself,” Kylie said, returning the smile. She seemed to fit right in with how her yellow fur caught the light coming through the trees just right.
She nodded politely, tail swaying a bit behind her with each step. “Spring’s good too, especially when the flowers-”
Both of their ears perked up as a child up ahead cried out, having tripped over an untied shoelace. “Uh oh,” Kylie mumbled as he reached for the small first aid kit in his hoodie pocket. The two of them hurried up close and the opossum gave the group ahead a wave to let them go on ahead.
Kira watched from a few feet away as he tended to the little wolf’s scuffed knees, relieved that it wasn’t serious. Her eyes soon wandered around until they fixated on a small glint of light off the trail. Curiously, she stepped away to investigate.
“There ya go! You’ll be walkin’ fine,” Kylie said reassuringly to the pup as he finished tying their shoe a few minutes later after the wolf-pup had stopped crying. He smiled up at his mother who gave a sincere “Thank you”. He then turned and immediately raised an eyebrow, having noticed an absence from the group.
“Is something wrong?” a fox asked.
Kylie shook his head, “Nah, just a wanderer. I’ll find her. Ya’ll go on and catch up to the others!” He smiled as they nodded and hurried back up the path before turning to find Kira. Biting his lip, the opossum saw no trace of that bright yellow fur, yet he did notice a patch of disturbed grass and quickly followed it.
Kira, meanwhile, was only getting even more curious and somewhat frustrated as the little flash of light just seemed to keep at a distance from her. She kicked up some fallen leaves, too focused on the mystery object to notice the ground very gradually getting damper and softer under her feet. Eventually, her stubbornness paid off. Right in the middle of a clearing was a shiny, metal Hyperion keychain. She could recognize that lightly tilted “H” anywhere.
“Like a charm,” whispered a voyeur to himself as the feline took the bait. He watched with bated breath as Kira stepped out onto the soft, muddy ground. The cat snickered as she then plunged in with a startled yelp, sinking down to her thighs rather suddenly, only a few feet from the keychain.
The yellow feline froze for a moment before opening her eyes to the current predicament. “Oh gosh…” she mumbled. Kira was certainly stuck, thigh-deep in, thankfully warm, mud. Yet, despite how warm and velvety-soft the waterlogged dirt might have been, she really didn’t want to stick around. Mustering all her strength she leaned back and tugged hard on her leg. It was after she wore herself out after a good couple of seconds of pulling with no progress what-so-ever that she decided to add “incredibly sticky” to the growing list of adjectives for this pit.
She huffed and took a good moment to catch her breath, crossing her arms. Quite the bind, she thought to herself, but at least she could still feel mostly solid ground against her feet. “This is all your fault,” she grumbled as she glared at the keychain, “but you’ll still be mine once I’m out!” Kira geared up for another escape attempt and pulled even harder on the same leg, grunting with effort, but in the end it only wore her out even more and left her stuck in place.
In all actuality, Kira had managed to shift her position somewhat, just in the wrong direction. She gasped loudly as the ground under her feet practically melted away, becoming nothing more than the same viscous muck she was already trapped in. The mud-turned-quicksand climbed up her legs as the feline sank in.
“Finally!” the voyeur said to himself as the show finally began, his brown fur still camouflaged against the trees. The cat smirked as he leaned back in the shade while the trapped Kira squirmed and wiggled against the grip of the mud, cheeks flush with color and shuddering as the gooey muck claimed her thick hips. As her downward movement slowed for the moment, he scratched his chin, examining her expression. “Huh.”
Kira grumbled, looking less panicked and more… inconvenienced. She had a hike to get back to for Pete’s sake! The feline wiggled just a bit more, her hips firmly trapped under the warm goop, midriff slowly following along. “Ugh… Gonna need a long shower after this…” she mumbled, voice shaking a little as the mud finally reached her chest.
The unseen cat leaned in a bit, hoping she’d make one important and fatal mistake. A huge Cheshire cat grin crossed his lips as Kira placed her paws on the surface and pushed yet again to her detriment. The mud clung to her paws like glue and kept her from lifting them too far up.
The feline just stared for a moment as now even her soft paws began to sink into the pit, her expression now a mix of frustration and hopelessness. She wasn’t getting out by herself anymore and that keychain only getting further away. She guessed she’d have to come back for it when she returned and be much more careful about it too. Kira offered no struggles as the quicksand swallowed up her chest and steadily claimed her shoulders as well.
Kylie, who had been wandering for a while now, losing and finding Kira’s tail again and again, was getting worried. “Ma’am?” he called out, never having actually learned her name. He soon perked up his ears as he spotted a set of pawprints in the mud. Finally, he had a solid trail, but it was even more cause for alarm as the opossum knew the forest floor only got softer from here.
“H-hello?” a familiar voice shouted.
His fears were confirmed as he saw nothing more than a head resting on the surface of a churned up mud pit. “Oh crud…”
The cat in the distance raised an eyebrow, not displeased at the appearance of a second potential victim of his pit. He chuckled as Kylie navigated the edge of the pit, trying not to get stuck himself, all while Kira kept sinking, though much slower than before. The cat raised an eyebrow as the opossum wrapped his long tail around a nearby tree at the edge of the muck, giving a few firm tugs. “Hmm… Just don’t ruin her submersion, kid,” he mumbled after recognizing his caution.
“Hold still! I’ll get you out,” Kylie said, trying to keep calm as he sized up the situation only to have Kira huff at him.
“I am still, but that’s not keeping me from sinking!” She looked up at him, her cheeks puffed out in a way that would be adorable were she not sinking in quicksand.
The opossum took a few ginger steps out, sinking in to his knees. He was still out of reach and getting desperate. He tightened his tail around the tree and by the time he climbed out only Kira’s nose, ears, and the little curl of hair on the top of her head remained. Kylie bit his lip, glancing at the closer, but much more frail looking tree he passed over the first time. He shook his head and hurried over, knowing he had to do something even if it was reckless.
“Go on, kid. You can get her! That tree is as safe as can be,” the cat snickered, his sarcasm going unheard. He watched from his seat on a branch as Kylie wrapped his long, prehensile tail around the small tree, removed his hoodie and shirt, and leapt in. Kira’s nose had long since sunk under and all that remained were her twitching ears, but as the opossum strained forward, those too vanished completely.
Kira held her breath, feeling the warm mud quiver around her at the opossum got closer. She willed him to hurry up with all her might which seemed to work as she soon felt his paw on the top of her head. Her lungs began to feel the strain as she felt Kylie trace down her cheek, neck, and shoulder, trying to find some leverage before his paw hooked under her arm. While they weren’t done fighting yet, she felt relieved as his other paw found purchase as well.
“One, two, three!” Kylie grit his teeth together as he pulled hard against the sticky mud. With a monumental effort from the opossum and the tree, the trapped feline broke the surface again. He kept pulling, leaning further and further back until he was practically laying on the surface.
“Huh. Guess it was safe,” the cat said while the two below caught their breath. He shrugged, turned, and hopped off the branch, satisfied he got to see at least one of them go under. All it meant was that he’d have to figure something special out to make sure he got them next time.
Kira shook off as much of the mud as she could even as she helped push back to solid ground, splattering the opossum in the process. The whole extraction process felt longer than going under, considering how clingy the muck was. Still, the feline stood up and poked around with her feet as soon as they reached solid ground.
“Whew. That was a close one,” Kylie said with a shaky chuckle as he stood up as well, wiping some of the gunk off. He sighed, his fur too messy to put his shirt back on. “You okay ma’am?”
Kira nodded and examined herself, quickly finding that finishing the hike was out of the question now. “Yup, thanks for the save! You can call me Kira too!” she said rather cheerfully for someone who nearly suffocated.
The opossum bundled up his remaining clothes, leaving his shorts on for now. He extended a muddy paw, “Names Kylie.” The two shook hands and shared a smile before finding their paws stuck together. After an awkward chuckle, the two managed pulled their paws apart. “How about we get cleaned up before we accidently get stuck together?”
“Good idea,” Kira said, giggling quietly. They both turned back to the trail and got a few steps away before the feline gasped. “My keychain!” she exclaimed, rushing back towards it after grabbing a stick.
Kylie raised an eyebrow and headed back as well, watching as she tried to hook the little trinket on the stick. “All this for a keychain?” he commented which earned him a bop on the head.
