OldTiger knows too well the sounds of an aggressive A-10, but if the Warthog growls, its likely doing its job! That and they are great dealing with pests.

Mmmm...I’d have to see it. You can get a STOL effect from mounting engines on the wings in such a way that their exhaust travels over the top of the wing, delays boundary separation at high angles of attack and thus provides a short-takeoff/landing capability. It never really took off as a workable design (pardon the pun).
Both STOL and VTOL involves significant penalties in both range and payload. Looks cool (think Harrier) but can limit you in ways you’d otherwise like to avoid. Takes a BUNCH of power to launch straight up. That means huge fuel burn and weight reduction requirements (less ordnance and/or fuel) that puts you to close to the battle and thus vulnerable when on the ground and carrying less kinetic weapons per sortie...which makes for more sorties and more chance of losing the asset more quickly while doing less damage to the enemy. Until we get engines that are substantially more powerful while at the same time being highly fuel efficient, the Rattler idea will probably be cool-looking but impractical.

Easy meat, especially if hit from above. But we can mess ‘em up pretty bad at fairly long range at low angles of impact as well. And in an armor/mech infantry battle, all you have to do is stop him and the resultant feeding frenzy from defenders who see a vehicle obviously disabled will do the rest. If a GAU-8 round made contact, that would pretty much guarantee him being a mort.
