Here's the trick: just put a net about halfway down the pit ^^ to deep to climb back up but not to deep to make you loose your snacks!

Alternately. install the secret passageway for them that the hero most assuredly won't find. Make sure to color the wall something obvious so that your minions don't forget and ensure there are plenty of power-ups in there for them if they need a pick me up.
