Rovert and his family are from the DPREI, the cage-match capitalism city-island that's one of the richest and most powerful islands in the New World thanks entirely to cage-match capitalism. As a representative of his family company he searches Coolin's Grant for islands to exploit for profit.

On his arm are a pair of loda leech twins doing color-match phasing. Daplin's animals and Loda Leeches came to the Old World from the Pillar World in distant history, and their bond remains strong. Loda Leeches are sapient collections of leeches that can shift their form fluidly so their traditional role is clinging to the forelimbs of a Daplin's animal and serving as an array of fingers.

Jari Obi Liiti-Garsin was born in the Escalihax district of the Auroral Confederacy, an island-nation whose island is an absolutely massive castle made of Ocean-born cliffs and walls. He was part of the militia for a while, which is important since the auroral beasts are constantly trying to take the castle island back, and you gotta have guys who can wander around shooting them up constantly. He got bored with the local culture and sold himself out as a mercenary in DPREI, which ranks several stages higher on "do what you enjoy" and has a lot less of the whole "take things serious."

He's done some stuff he hasn't really agreed with working for Rovert but he balances it out by 1) knowing other people would be being paid to do this if he wasn't so it doesn't really matter if it's him or not, and 2) he's getting paid really well to do this kinda stuff, so you know, whatever.
