1940 portrait of (then) F/O Rex drawn in the style of Capt. Cuthbert Orde, RFC, who best known for his portraits of Allied Battle of Britain pilots.
His selected works were compiled and published in 1943 as Pilots of Fighter Command; Sixty-Four Portraits by Capt. Cuthbert Orde. The book featured 64 monochrome portraits and lists 160 of Capt. Orde works, commissioned by Air Commodore Harald Peake from the Air Ministry in 1940, although some sources says all his portraits numbered up to 300.
The portrait shows Rex at the height of Battle of Britain on September 1940. He first saw action during Battle of France on 10 May as part of No. 1 squadron RAF, Shooting down a Messerschmitt Bf-110C-1 and later Henschel Hs-126A-1 reconnaissance aircraft on 21 May.
The squadron pulled back from France on 16 June, 1940. However, few pilots stayed until 18 June and still provide air cover over port of St. Nazaire on 17 June but were unable to prevent the sinking of HMT Lancastria. During the engagement Sgt. Fred Berry was able to shot down one of the attacking Junkers Ju-88A flown by Oblt. Sigmund-Ulrich Freiherr von Gravenreuth, the Staffelkapitän of I/ KG 30.
On 30 August his flight was vectored over Thames estuary against an unescorted formation of 12 Dornier Do-17Z and was able to claim one destroyed and one probable. Later that afternoon his flight was again scrambled against Ju-88 formation over Lincolnshire, Rex attacked two escorting Messerschmitt Bf-109E-4 and saw the first burst into flames and the second break away pouring black smoke. For the day's action he was awarded Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) on 1 September 1940.
On the morning of 13 September, flying Hawker Hurricane I P2770, Rex and his squadron was scrambled against large formation of Do-17Z, in the ensuing dogfight he failed to notice two formations of escorting 109s coming from above. He was able to shake off first two 109s but eventually shot down by Bf-109E-4 Flown by Oblt. Gerhard Lindt of I/ JG26 and had to bale out with shrapnel wound all over his chest, which put him out of action until January 1941.
