This is a work for Concert Band that I wrote at the very end of my Undergraduate life. I tossed this off in a month's fit of inspiration. I reused some of the themes from "Game", but I am much happier with them in this work. I also used a short bit from Dohnányi's Passacaglia in Eb Minor, which in my opinion, is the greatest piano work ever written. Ever since I first heard it back in the early nineties, it has been a powerful influence over my music.
This piece is written in Sonata-Allegro form, featuring the standard Concert Band instruments of Woodwinds, Saxophones, Brass, and Percussion including Xylophone and Chimes. Written in 1998. One of my best early pieces.
And this time it's in mp3 format!

Alas, midi slaughters otherwise lovely music. :(
Having listened to your pieces directly using the properly mastered instruments the conversion to the formats FA wants does horrific things to them.
Hopefully one day you'll be able to offer us these excellent compositions with properly mastered instruments, yes?

verry nicely done. im not familiar with the reference, and whilst i agree the midi sounds are thin, (of course it would be better with real stuff, but cant all afford to get the EastWest libraries right away :P ) its great, detailed writing. I look forward to hearing your portion of the collab :)
Thank you, Dolphinboy!
I'm not surprised you aren't familiar with the reference. It's not a very well known piece. I actually played it at Anthrocon 2006 on the Hotel piano, and Big Blue Fox had a portion of it on his video. That might be the only place to find it short of buying it on CD. It's well worth buying though.
I'm glad you enjoyed my piece too. It's still a favorite of mine.
I look forward to hearing what everyone else does on the collab too! Are we still waiting for the second piece?

Nice writing, I hope you continue to write pieces for Wind Ensemble, as it is the best way to get better at it. You already write well, though MIDI doesnt really allow to hear a piece to its fullest. Your composing reminds me of David Holsinger's music. My only advice to you is to make more of the bassline instruments, give them more to do than just static notes (which you did in some places). This is something that took me a long time to get right but I am sure you can to!
Thanks for the listen and the good advice! It is a constant struggle for me to remember that the melody doesn't have to be in the upper registers all the time.
Almost all of my compositional effort in the last few years has gone into my Piano Concerto (still unfinished but I hope to get past my block on it soon); though I do have a few choral works I've written, and a piano Rhapsody and Piano Trio that I toy with from time to time. No new concert band works, although I can probably adapt the themes from an abandoned work to do that.
Oh, I even have an impossible organ fugue, but I'd like to make it not impossible first before sharing it.
