So the other night I had the idea to lump some clay on a rather ordinary fox figure that sat on my desk. The results aren't bad I think, though air dry clay as I suspected isn't ideal due to cracking around the edges when it shrinks, so I had to go around and carefully fix and blend everything. Then I tried painting and well it got a little muddy.... still not too bad I think. Overall a whole lot easier to modify a model then start from scratch. A fun little project that doesn't have the same commitment as starting from scratch with clay. :P

it is indeed, and yeah I repainted the whole thing. The face before wasn't that great.
I'm always on the look out for a good deer figure. The only one I've found that actually isn't bad is this mojo whitetail buck (standing in the background there), their doe doesn't look nearly as good though. Still looking for a good doe.

incoming ramble about figures since I don't have anything better to do until dinner.
I have looked at their figures before, but out of curiosity I gave them another look. Overall I think I like their fox better, it has a more interesting pose and the colors are nicer, though sculpt is more important than color to me since I don't mind painting them. That said it's a bit less detailed then the schleich with bolder fur patterning obscuring any of the more subtle details. I think schleich in general is pretty good at getting really small clean details into their molds.
Looking at other Papo figures I kinda wouldn't mind having the reindeer, the buck is one I considered, but I liked the mojo one a bit better. The white-tailed doe actually looks pretty decent, I don't remember if I looked at it before, but I may get it.
May as well add that https://www.minizoo.com.au/ is pretty awesome since they seem to have just about everything in one place and ship worldwide for a reasonable price. :p

We have Schleich in every store here. So I look at their figurines pretty regularly. And most of them are pretty good. I even have some of them.
But I still feel like Papo adds finer detail to their figurines, down to the ballz. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16280354/
But maybe I was just lucky with the ones I picked :) I know Schleich has a lot of variation in their model quality.
I will definetely look into minizoo.
Oh and I worked with Apoxie Sculpt before, to fix rips in my prints. Its a 2 component putty and it hardenes really well and smooth.
I wonder how that would perform for something like this.

Schleich quality does seem to vary quite a bit from model to model, though that seems to be a thing with any of the toy makers. They have a handful of really nice horses while others are pretty derp looking. They do have the advantage of being in most of the farm supply stores around here. For me Papo is definitely has a number of good figures, I just seemed to notice they look a little rougher compared to some of the really fine hair detailing on my my schleich horses. Regardless I think they're both good. Actually I just noticed Papo is the one who makes these rather interesting anthroporphic figures, I have the "dragon mutant" which is remarkably detailed and well painted for the price. https://www.minizoo.com.au/search.p.....ery=mutant+man
I have heard of using stuff like that for this kind of thing since It doesn't shrink and hardens well. I may consider that in the future.
