Purely accidental! It's apparently what happens when you use markers on thermal receipt paper, and only develops about 5 minutes afterwards :O

Definately a unique way of handling things, though personally, I think ya got it backwards. Considering bones are solid, and flesh is much more pliant, I would think that if anything grew out of turn, it would be the flesh first, then the bones...

... So I'm picturing some poor bloke who's wing and tailflesh slather out behind them in a quivering mass, before the skeleton forms inside each one, sliding inside like fingers into a glove, creating an almost inflation like effect.

Anyway, its all semantics, theory, and artistic license anyway, so its your call.

Why is this under the species apple... Better yet... Why is that a species in the first place

It's ever better due to the classification Mammals -> Apple. Since when do apples lactate!
