This was meant as a gift picture to my friend EvilArt when I first visited him in '16. Almost two years have I worked on and off this piece been in limbo before I finally got my butt in gear and finished it. Twice have I visited JB now and twice have I failed to finish it during my stay. I'm hopeless, lol.
As I love squirrels, among the SF characters, Gloria was a no-brainer for me to draw, and as I've heard JB frequently listen to Natacha Atlas, the setting and concept was quickly made. So here's her in a belly dancer's get-up, entertaining the guests with song, dance, percussion, looks, and curves.
My inking was, and still is not really up to snuff, and it took some time to get over the hurdle of actually shading the thing. Having finished it I can say I definitely learned a thing or two about greytoning and shading it, most of all doing it efficiently. I also introduced some crude environmental lighting into this picture, where lighting on the floor is a bit dimmer than higher up. I wish to expand on this in the next picture. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the result, save for the long long production time.
The original and sketch are coming your way soon, JB. Hopefully you found it worth the wait!

The character - surprisingly - was the easy part. Even though I see some anatomical mistakes now, the body and pose came together quickly and satisfyingly. When I started on the background... That's when I opened a can of worms for me to swallow. And swallow it I did. Eventually, sometimes begrudgingly. Two years further, and I'm a bit wiser now, taking away some points that could go better in the future. I want to thank you for the kind words, these made the trek so much more worth it!

half of the BG work must have been erasing and renewing lines and contrasts. all the fine shadings there must have been incredibly sensitive. I once did a full graphite piece pefore with light and dark and even darker shadings. 1/3 of it was reworking and darkening areas. :P
I think I see some errors, but they are not big enough to bother me, so no worries. :)
aww, it's good to hear some nice things about the art that took us longest. many times it's the quick sketch that gets all the praise...
have you ever rued going from pencils to ink? well, I did, occasionally.

Inking is a very definite and specialized media that takes a lot of trial and error, and regular practice. I got frustrated many times in the past, as my inking never really reached the levels of some of my old idols, like André Franquin and Pièrre Seron. So yes, I know the bouts of frustration associated with inking very well. Now I cheat in a way, which is to say that my lines are sculpted with a very thin fineliner. And even then, not every line comes out exactly the way I want them, or I make little inking mistakes.

yes, and there is line weight. if one doesn't useline weight their name should be hergé... XD or the authors of the dutch comic, Leo the Terrorist, Theo Schippers and Theo van de Bogaart, which simulated hergés inking style very well.
I grew up with francobelgian comics myself, and used to trace the panels and end paper images for a while, but decided to try and do somethign on ym own eventually.
oh yes, I struggle with ink myself sometimes, and the problem of how to correct them. XD

Thank you so much for the positive words, I'm always glad to have made another happy! I hope I can continue to do this in the future... Who knows, a Jensin picture in the future? It's an OCD thing of mine that once I start detailing one thing I have to detail other things, even though I shouldn't. It's good therapy but - in all honesty - it takes a long time and design-wise it made the sketch a little confusing, even for me! Luckily shadow, lighting and line thickness can sort things out a lot!

It makes me happy that you like it, Kenalbus (Ngr). And so am I that this picture is finished. I was itching for a picture to be finished, because it took a long long time. And it's for a good friend, which I feel - still - that it was overdue. I hope I can keep those periods of procrastination down to a minimum in the future. Next one will definitely be done faster, if at least I can keep up with my near daily streaming schedule. Next up: Dktorzi's gift picture of Nini! See you next stream!

Glad to hear that you like it, JB! Makes the journey that much more worth it! I'll try to have it sent to you by the end of the week, if not, start of next week. I'll let you know when I sent it. Hopefully in the future I can do some fan art in a more 'timely' fashion .

That's alright. Non-squirrel believers are also welcome here. Thanks for the kind words about my skills! This one has been a lesson and a half on what could go better, but also a celebration to my good friend and an all-around cool guy. Hopefully I can entertain you more with the next submission!
