A Welcome to the Company and a Donation of a Different Kind
On Sunday, I was invited to a special event at the Busways Penrith Depot where they held a handover ceremony for one of the retiring buses. Fleet 251, a Custom Coaches bodied Mercedes Benz O405 has been donated to the Sydney Bus Museum as a historical item. At this event, I got to have a look at the brand new Mercedes Benz O500LE Custom Coaches CB80 bodied bus bound for the North Coast depots, This bus is painted into a new livery that Busways is trialing on the North Coast (the Sydney Busways buses will never feature this livery due to NSW Government requirements to have all buses in a Blue and White livery).
This photo, taken by Mid at the Penrith Regatta Centre shows all the buses at this event:
Fleet 1254, the O500LE
Fleet 251, the Mercedes O405 donated to the Sydney Bus Museum. Built in 1994 and withdrawn from service in October 2017.
Fleet 172, a Custom Coaches bodied MAN 16.240 built in 1989 and withdrawn from service in 2012, now part of a heritage fleet.
Fleet 51, a Custom Coaches bodied Volvo B58-56 built in 1979 and withdrawn from service around 2009ish, now also part of a heritage fleet.
And Fleet 202, also a Mercedes Benz O405, built in 1992 and withdrawn from service in 2016, now preserved in an as is condition by a private owner.
Busways at one point was the largest owner of Mercedes-Benz O405 buses in Australia with over 300 in service.
It's very obvious that being around heavy vehicles is something that makes me happy.
