Name: Froslass
Classification: Snow land
Type: Ice/ghost
Number: 478
Evolution: female Snorunt --> Froslass (use Dawn Stone)
Height: 1.40 m
Weight: 25 kg
Habitat: cold desserts, high mountains
Description: Froslass is a fascinating pokémon for at least two reasons. 1) They appear to be monogendered, and 2) they have an average body temperature of minus 21 degrees Celsius.
Froslass grow exclusively out of female Snorunt, leading to a monogendered pokémon species. However, they are not what would classicaly be described as 'female'. They seem unable to breed: breeding has never been observed, and autopsy has shown no clear reproductive organs. Most female Snorunt turn into Glalie and it is a mystery why some of them become Froslass. One theory is that Snorunt are more likely to become Froslass when the environmental conditions during the first few weeks of their lives have been particularly harsh.
Froslass often appear to float over the snow. They are actually sliding along on their big, slug-like foot. They weigh only half as much as a human of similar height, and their weight is distributed over a much larger area, preventing them from sinking into the snow like humans would. Because their bodies are so cold, they don't melt the snow, leaving very little trace that they ever passed anywhere. It has a high degree of control over its own body, which it needs to keep the temperature inside its body just right for the various substances it contains, including water, which it cannot allow to freeze inside its body. What appear to be wings on Froslass' back, serve the same purpose as, for example, a Nidorino's ears - the only difference is that Froslass is still trying to loose body warmth at minus 30. The indentation on its forehead allows it to smell and the fins on its arms are very sensitive thermometers. This allows Froslass to find its prey even in bad weather conditions and in spite of its terrible eyesight. With such a low body temperature, Froslass' bodies cannot be based on water. Any water in ingests with its prey leaks out through two small horns on its head, where it freezes and forms ever bigger horns. Froslass scrape their head against rocks or the frozen soil to break off the ice. Unlike other pokémon that come from extremely cold areas, like Piplup or Dewgong, Froslass actually cannot survive in warmer climates. If temperatures regularly get above 5 degrees Celsius, Froslass will die within weeks.
It is hard to observe Froslass hunting, because they hunt at night or in bad weather, when visibility is low. So we don’t know how they keep themselves from being spotted by prey. We do know how they actually make the kill: when she has reached the optimum distance, a Froslass breathes out a cloud of air with a temperatur that can go down as far as minus 71 degrees Celsius. The prey instantly freezes. Froslass keeps breathing unto the prey until it is frozen solid, then either eats it or takes it back to its dwelling. After such a hunt, Froslass' core body temperature rises dangerously and it has to take at least a day of rest to recover. Researchers have found morbid Froslass dwellings where frozen prey is displayed almost like in a wax museum. Froslass make such storages to help them through difficult periods when prey is scarce. Surprisingly large prey has been found in these collections, sparking a heated debate between scientists about how Froslass manage to transport such bulk back home.
I like the idea of Ghost Pokémon being extremophiles, and Ghost and Steel Pokémon not being based on carbon. Science-fiction writers have fun with it all the time, so why shouldn’t I? Also, I swear that when I began sketching this, it was cute.
