One month on the new diet and new shoes as of this weekend. Building weight is going slow but she has a lot more energy and does not seem as stiff.

http://www.mfa-inc.com/web/guest/eq.....eds/legends#sr is the feed. Ill have to get the scale back out along with the feeding info to tell you how much (I dont remember) to be unscientific its about 3/4s of a gallon pitcher with a hand full (about a cup worth) of beet pulp. Im guessing her weight at the 1000-1200 range (Ill buy a tape next time I am at the store and give you a good idea) and as for optimal is when she looks good and feels good.
I dont want to put too much on to be hard on her joints (Bad authritis and you can see her back hips are not right) but I want to put on some weight before the cold hits. Thats how it all started. Last winter was a bitch and was hard on her. She dropped a lot of weight twords the end of winter and into spring... At one point at the last cold snap I didnt think she was going to make it but bute, a warm blanket and barn she pulled through. All I can say is I wish I could lose weight that quick. But regular feeding and grazing was not putting it back So I am trying the new diet in hopes I can build her up before winter hits. Gut tells me this one is gonna be a bad one too. Needless to say she is no longer ridable unless you could find a young child (which I would trust her with) but she is such a sweet lady i dont want to give up on her.
As far as condition her looks are improving and her energy levels are much better. She has new shoes now (she has to have em on all 4 due to hoof problems) and she is actually moving around with the herd and even playing a bit. Before we started all this about all she did was move from one sunny spot to another and just rest either standing or laying.

Legends is a good feed. You may want to add cosequin, it really helps with joints. Most feed weighs about one pound per quart, if your only feeding 3 quarts then your not anywhere near the upper limit for a horse. If you are feeding 2 times per day, most horses can tolerate 5 quarts, per feeding. I do not know off hand the feeding rate for, Legends SR. so I will not say wether, or not you could give more. I personally used Triple Crown Complete. It has a high calorie output, plus high fiber, for older horses, and those that have trouble grazing. It puts weight on the most stubborn Throughbred. You may also want to consider, equine adjusted alfalfa hay. It has been treated to make it mineral balenced for horses. And it can be good for those hard to keep weight horses. Normally I like to see 10-20 pounds gain per month minimum. Judging by her body condition, I would put at least 200lbs, on her. Although if she is over 20, you may only need 100-150, since older horses tend to have bony hips, due to muscle loss.
I went with the best thing the feed store here had. Next time I see the vet I will take her current weight, the tag info of the bag and ask him what he thinks since he knows her. And I use something (which I need to get more of) called level 5000 its a glucosimine condriton liquid. I take it myself. Tastes like liquid ass but it works.
she actually is in her mid teens but as I understand it someone tried jumping her and it blew her hind hips out. I know in her better years when she first got here she could support me and really loved to ride. I used to work around dressage horses and thought ehh for the hell of it lets see... Gave her the first command and she went through the whole pattern from memory. One thing on the agenda is to get the round pen put back together in a spot that is rock free and level so I can lunge her. Even if I cant ride her I will still tack her up and let her do some laps. Back when I would come out with her saddle and tack she would almost be beside herself she was so happy.
