What do you do...?
"You are standing at one end of a wooden dock. The sea air tickles your nose with a salty tang, and the sound of it lapping against the nearby shore only makes you realise just how silent this island is.... To your right, the mast of a sunken ship rises from the water, its dark, sunken timbers fractured by the waves. At the opposite end of the dock, a stone staircase rises to the top of a hillock, atop which rests a giant gear, matte and grey in the pale sun. A few steps away, at the base of the stairs, rests a contraption - about waist high; brushed metal, dulled with age.
In the distance, the trees rustle. You can't help but imagine that they sound like the whispers of two lost souls.
What do you do...?"
This was super fun to do! So recently, my good friend
Wrincewind actually bought a house. It's a lovely little thing, so nice on the inside, and I'm sure he'll have a lot of fun with it. But of course, a house is jut a building until you fill it up - so I thought I'd contribute a little, and make a poster for him :3
And well, one thing really leaped to mind when I came up with that. Myst!
The classic point-and-click puzzle game, Myst is a series that Wrince loves (and in some ways even embodies), and he got me into it too. A world so full of lore, backstory and challenging (and occaisionally bullshit) puzzles, it certainly got the creative juices flowing.
So here it is; my tribute to the wonderful world of Myst.
Enjoy~

Pfff :P
I know what you mean, and in Riven they do let you take a few notes and books with you - but another thing I learnt was that a driving idea behind the game was to do away with an inventory or interface as much as possible, in a time when these things were in inherent to other games in the genre. The creators initially wanted Myst to be less of a strict game, and more of an interactive story where you could decide where to go, when, and what choices to make - the puzzles just flowed from that!

Oh yeah I heard that. They just took it a step too far, with obviously portable important clues I walked back to over and over... There was a "making of" on the same CD with the game. (Favorite moment: slacking off by playing Sid Meier's Pirates! - and covering it up. "What are you doing?" "Nothing...!")
you can't die in myst(trapped inside a book), uru, Myst v (trapped in Myst island or fail the quest) you can actually die in riven getting shot by ghen with his dart rifle, there's are Soo many out comes in riven, and you can die in exile by two ways getting tricked by saveero or left the shield off by mistake and link back to tohamna and he struck you in the head as go get back home and for Myst 4 you can die you get killed by yesseha via mind control by siruss by soul transfer with the memory chamber
Can you believe it? Myst is coming up on its 30th anniversary in September this year. You should seriously try the VR version, it's *incredible* to be immersed in the world...
Gosh, this is such a great game to replay over 10 years after the last time I did... And I look forward to Riven next and no longer having to switch between five discs :3

I had a potato-for-the-time PC that I first played it on, ugly CRT and everything. I was like 5 at the time and I didn't really make it past the underwater maze bit. I vividly remember going to a new island and having to insert the next disc before I could continue.
I played it for real with my mom in middle school and we played the whole series together- the old copies of Myst and Riven intended for Windows 95 wouldn't run on Windows 7, so we got them off GOG.
Myst has been with me my whole life pretty much, and damn I love visiting the world again. I really wish they'd release an updated version of Riven though, but the crunchy pre-rendered graphics do kind of hit the right spot for me...
Also- have you encountered a bug in Myst VR where the hologram projector cutscene doesn't play properly? (When inputting the right number of marker switches)
