i sat down to work on tom_clowder's commission but ended up doing this small, messy, failed sketch instead. the character looks way too young and way too feminine.

This looks good - if you're going for more masculine, I'd suggest a broader shoulder and stronger jaw. It doesn't look too feminine to me, but I'm not a good judge of that, I don't think.
As for looking older, try adding a couple agelines (not a lot of wrinkles, but like a line on either side of the mouth or coming down from under the eye, if you know what I mean).
