Jasper's dad works for a company named Tendrilicon, which does various scientific research in fields such as robotics, genetics, AI technology, and other, more "sketchy" fields that government-funded labs tend to avoid. Nougat was a project that was put together by a scientist without permission from the board, made from spare parts as a "backyard" project by a lonely employee in the robotics department. The unit was confiscated, but Jasper's dad, being on the board, was able to convince the higher ups to let him take the android sergal to his son, who lived on his own in an apartment. Although Nougat wasn't originally intended to be a cleaning specialty bot, they get the job done, and is a nice companion for Jasper to boot. Considering Jasper lives on his own and doesn't get out except to go to work and shop for groceries, he certainly needs the company.
