I have to say I wasn't too impressed with his either (I listened to the boss and Aquatic Ruin themes). They share the same problem they pretty much all do, in that they sound like they just took a MIDI someone else made and then pasted different instruments on each channel. The boss theme sounded especially out of place and not imposing at all to me.
It's news to me that those are uncommon, heh.
