Those of you who know me online (Taps, AIM, ect) have noticed I'm rarely on any more. Well here's the reason for that. A little over a week ago we had a hen hatch some eggs out in the weeds in our field. I heard a peeping which I knew wasn't from the chicks we already had and searched through the weeds for the sound. I found this chick laying in the mud (was raining) beside the nest the hen was sitting on. He was cold and barely alive, having just recently hatched. Under the hen was 5 more chicks. Why was he out of the nest you might wonder? He was born with a condition usually found in older chicken called croockneck (I think that's the right name) which is a vitamin deficiency that causes chickens (usually Japanese Silkies) to turn their heads upside down under themselves. At least I assumed that was what was wrong with him as he have 2 older chicks that suffer from it, might have been water on the brain or some thing I've not encountered before. Hens know when some thing isn't right with a chick and will often kick them out of the nest, we're guessing that's what happened. So I adopted him/her and have had to carry him around with me nearly 24/7 since. He's getting better as he started life with his head literally between his legs, now he only curves it back against his back as you see in this picture. We've had him on a medicated feed. And yes he's spoiled rotten, either sleeping or eating. He's an odd one, he sleeps on his side or back like a human (I'm laying down in the picture) and has a fit if he's not touching you (If I move my hand he wakes up and starts peeping.)
So that's where I've been all this time. I've shown pics of him to a few friend but figured this was faster then e-mailing each person I know.

If I has a nickle for every animal I've hand raised or rescued... You name an animal common to the US and there's a good chance I've raised one. Mostly farm animals as I grew up on a farm but a load of wild animals too. I won't waste time uploading animal pics here. This pic was enough...
And I don't want people getting the idea I'm a nice guy, it'd ruin my reputation.

And to answer a question I know will come up, his/her name came from a joke when we found him that he was smaller then a chicken nugget. A joke which was made worse when the only box we had to put him in at the time was a McDonalds kids meal box. He's been since moved to a larger box.
Nugget update: He/she is a little monster at 2 weeks of age, think the terrible 2's for toddlers. He doesn't want to take naps when you want him to and has a fit when put in his box even if I'm sitting beside it in view. I tried reintroducing him to his mother and siblings when he was a week old and he was terrified of them. Now at 2 weeks it took him a hour or two to get used to the other chick but is still a little shy around his mom. Nothing like spending an entire day sitting in a pen to baby sit a chick... He manged to peck a couple of the chicks in the eye (they're fine) and his mother in the comb and wattle a few times, she was not amused. He's noticeably smaller then his siblings and his feathers are coming in slower then theirs. This is a little odd as he gets much more food then they do. I think its a lack of exercise as he spent most of his 1st week of life sleeping. I've been having him run around a lot now that he's keeping his head up right most of the time, he chases me around the yard and is pretty fast though he can't run in a straight line, tends to curve the way his head tilts.
If any one is thinking of having a kid, get a chick first and spend the amount of time with them their mom would... You'll change your mind. He starts peeping at 8am every morning to wake me up for break fest and them wants to run and play for the next couple hours, squirming out of my hand every chance he gets and is starting to jump/flutter at the side of his box if I put him in it. I'll be needing a bigger box soon. I was tricking him into sleeping on my lap while online so I didn't have to hold him but he's figured it out and now flutters/climbs up me every time so he can lay on my chest to be held.
Going to be a while before I know if he's a Nugget or a Nuggette, we have too many roosters as is.

Nugget update: He's nearly 4 weeks old now and still going. And by going I mean he's a little monster! I've been taking him out with the other chicks and his mom, who he's still scared of. He's noticeably smaller then the other chicks and his feathers are taking longer to come in, but as far as energy goes, he's way ahead of them. He never stops running or climbing or peeping. I thought he'd over ate last night, his crop was swollen and hard because he'd ate so much. He's a pig. I brought one of the chicks in to sleep in the cage with him but of course the chick wasn't pleased to be away from its mom. As a test I put the feeder in with the two of them and watched, Nugget ate WAY more then the other chick who's larger then him. They are all out in a pen right now together, he fusses when I leave him but is running around with all the other chicks eating. Tried sticking him under his mom when she was laying down and he keeps squirming back out. I'm hoping to be able to leave him out in the cage with the other chicks and mom at night but if he won't go under her it won't work nights.
Oh well, that's the update.
Oh well, that's the update.
Nugget is coming up on 6 weeks and he's graduated out to the barn with his mother and siblings. He's been out there for a few nights now and doing fine. I take them all out every day (when its not raining) and put them in a big pen so they can run through the grass and do chick stuff. He's still a little monster but he's forgetting who I am some what. He doesn't come to me when I call unless I pat the ground like I have food but it's a good thing as he used to cry and stand at the fence when I left him with the other chicks, now he will go play with the other chicks until I come back. So basically he's a real chick now, running around and doing chick stuff, he's not scare of his mom any more and sleeps under her just fine nights.
Unfortunately, we have a a few other hens who've decided to start sitting so we'll have MORE chicks here soon. Hopefully they'll all be fine, I have enough to deal with working with the other chickens I have with croock neck. I'd post a pic of them on here but they look rather odd, the one is missing a lot of feathers (she's getting better though, medicated feed helped) and the other has his head under him most of the time.

I posted a pic of him mostly grown up as well.
