With the exception of Widget, my button quails hate being handled and cleaning day is very stressful for them. I had already lost one quail to a heart-attack induced by stress and I did not want it to happen again. So I starting thinking about bio-active setups and wondered if such a setup would work for quails. Living in a self-recycling ecosystem means the quails never have to be picked up and removed from their enclosure. Every morning I remove any poop and discarded food that I can find, while the worms and springtails take care of the rest. Hop and Pop have been living in this setup since these photos were taken in October, and though the vegetation has changed a lot since then (the quails nibble and trample the plants so they often need to be replaced), the quails are still happy and healthy and their confidence has increased a great deal.
