I think I heard that word in Pikmin 2 first, with the Caustic Dweevil enemies who'd use water to attack. A highly corroding liquid as stated by Olimar, but my English skills weren't as developed back then. So I assumed "caustic" had something to do with water, and since I need a word that started with a "c" to turn in into a "k"... Yeah.
I guess it was a reason for the water to hurt Olimar, with the suit corrosion. In the end, only the Caustic variant of the Dweevil family could hurt Olimar... Well, Volatile too, but that doesn't count =P Munge could never hurt him in the first place, though it has the most HP to make up for it. Anode and Fiery can be rendered useless with the suit upgrades. Best option was just to let the captains attack them.
