For me, it was just inventive compared to other horror visual novels. I like it for the same reason I like When They Cry in that it takes a genre of anime/ d rating games and destroys it, lol. Also the subtle unease and way you deal with the threat was interesting

any game that gives clues that you should look in a file in the game directory for more clues is very clever and is worth looking into in depth.

Part of it being popular is being picked up by the right streamers/youtubers, as with pretty much any game. Aside from that, it's not a game like most games (especially not interactive novels), so it did stick out.
