This is Little Fur, the star of one of my favorite children's books, appropriately titled as the same; Little Fur by Isobelle Carmody
She's a half-elf, half-troll (How that worked out is a mystery to me, especially since the father was the elf.) Who always has to be touching either the dirt, a living plant in the dirt, natural flowing water, or else natural stone formations. If she doesn't, even for a moment, she loses her connection to earth magic forever. Even a single finger or toe touching counts.
This makes crossing the street a serious problem, as she can't walk on concrete, cement, or asphalt. Additionally, weedkillers and other such poisons will burn her skin if she touches them.
It's a brilliant book, I think, and, while reading it, I just had to draw LIttle Fur.
