IRR = Interesting Reads on Reddit
[original post date = 25 august 2017]
Social Media Has Hijacked Our Minds • r/psychology
Disregard the comments. The article is the interesting read on this one. It talks about, basically, how the internet is making you addicted to it through various webdesign and programming choices. It uses a little scarier language than I think is needed, but it is still an interesting read anyway.
Trans men show unusual connectivity patterns in brain networks involved in self perception • r/psychology
Just the title is interesting. The comments might be interesting to you if you have never had a "trans debate" before. But if you have then it's the pretty much the same comments as you'd expect.
Native Americans/Indigenous Peoples of Reddit, what's it like to grow up on a Reservation in the USA? • r/AskReddit
This is really just eye-opening, if you ever wanted to hear first-hand accounts of people who grew up on the res. Also, a lot of Canadian First nations are in here.
A navy sailor describes his daily schedule on a US destroyer • r/bestof
So for this one you have to click the title at the top to get to the comment everyone is talking about. Both the original comment chain (that is linked) and the comments in this submission that I've linked are good. The original bestof comment is giving an example of their schedule in the US Navy, which gives extremely little time for sleep.
Comments in the original thread then ask for clarification about terms, or sympathize being overworked. Comments in the bestof thread are mostly veterans talking about how shitty similar schedules are and how being overworked and underslept is something endemic to the US Military.
Each week for the last few months, I bought 3 Powerball tickets for $6 and invested $6 into a Robo-Advisor App to compare return on investment [OC] • r/dataisbeautiful
A guy makes a (bad) graph comparing what investing money does vs. spending it on lottery tickets. Someone comments with the following:
How are you planning on scaling the Y-axis to maintain context to the 29¢ you've earned investing, after you win tonight's $800,000,000 Powerball jackpot?
What results is a very lengthy educational lesson about how images are compressed. Enlightening if you're into that sort of thing.
There are lots of posts about things you shouldnt go cheap on, whats something unexpected you did go cheap with and worked out well? • r/Frugal
See title. The more you know! =]
Since 'Every Frame A Paintings' success (and others) I feel there's been a ridiculous amount of film analysis' videos by people who aren't qualified to make them. • r/movies
An in-depth discussion about what makes a good movie review and a good youtuber. Also a side discussion on what Youtube has been, is, and is becoming, and how people are using it and what that means.
Americans (US) who have moved to europe, what is the biggest difference you have noticed in your new country? • r/AskReddit
I always enjoy reading stuff like this. Always good stuff to be learned.
Why Men Don’t Believe the Data on Gender Bias in Science • r/TrueReddit
The article itself is meh and the rest of the comments are pretty crap. This specific comment however is GREAT. It talks about gender bias in Orchestra and how it's EASILY worked around - by blind auditions. But people didn't want to do it until recently because... Well, I don't want to summarize the whole thing. Just read it.
