IRR = Interesting reads on reddit. Feel free to comment.
I am thinking about moving this to my scraps submissions because, for some dumb reason, having all these in my journals is making me uncomfortable (I don't get it either). But I'm also kind of lazy so I don't know when/if I ever will move them lol.
Anyway....
This week, a BUNCH of links became relevant. When it rains it pours. I have little to say on most of them. >_>
1. How Netflix personalizes movie and series artwork to influence what you watch - r/movies
The article goes through the entirely tl;dr process of how and why they do this. I personally found it interesting because when I was in MIS class, I did a pretty in-depth project on Netflix and their algorithms and found it fascinating.
Although on a personal level, I don't entirely agree with this type of marketing.
2. Inside the Rainbow Gulag: The Technicolor Rise and Fall of Lisa Frank
OK so this one isn't even a link to Reddit. I was reading something on Reddit and in the comments someone linked this article. I'm not sure it was related, but anyway this article was pretty fascinating. In one of those surprising yet somehow unsurprising ways. Who knew Lisa Frank of all people could be such a terrible person to work for. It's like Disney on steroids.
3. LPT: Librarians aren't just random people who work at libraries they are professional researchers there to help you find a place to start researching on any topic. - r/lifeprotips
Reading all the comments from librarians has been pretty eye-opening here. Like I knew they were helpful at finding stuff, but I didn't realize they were THAT decorated.
The top comments are totally different now and it looks like I didn't bookmark specific top comments because I didn't think this would happen (guess I'll always be saving comment chains now) but some memorable comments were that librarians have masters degrees, some have dual master degrees.
4. ELI5 the difference between 4 Wheel Drive and All Wheel Drive. - r/explainlikeimfive
I learned you a thing today. Enjoy.
5. UN poverty official touring Alabama's Black Belt: 'I haven't seen this' in the First World - r/truereddit
They actually released the results now, too: Alabama has the worst poverty in the developed world, U.N. official says
6. Shamanic View of Mental Health
Another thing not on reddit. Someone mentioned it in comments somewhere and I googled and this is one of the articles that came up. To summarize, I found it very interesting, but I don't know if I agree.
7. Amid “full employment,” no recovery in US wages—The jobs report provides further evidence that the much vaunted economic “recovery” in the US has overwhelmingly benefited Wall Street at the expense of the working class. - r/truereddit
gotta love me some depressing reminders about how muchthe world the US sucks woo
8. Former Facebook exec says social media is ripping apart society
tl;dr echo chambers is the reason the world is so partisian today
9. I created a website to visualize and quantify pros / cons for ANY Amazon electronics product, based on its user reviews. It enables readers to go through thousands of reviews in a few minutes. - r/dataisbeautiful
Not only cool, VERY USEFUL!!!!
10. Back in the 1700s and 1800s, new towns cropped up everywhere. How did those towns apply for a USPS Post office, and what were/are the conditions that need to be met to have the USPS put a post office in a new town? - r/askhistorians
Simply fascinating. Wish there were more answers.
11. Job interviewers of Reddit, what is the worst answer someone gave you? - r/askreddit
Humor break. I expect to see many of these responses in some book soon, if not Chive or BuzzFeed. Lol.
12. In 2004, the USS Princeton & 2 Super Hornets encountered an airliner-sized object with “no plumes, wings or rotors” which hovered ~50 feet above the ocean, then rapidly ascended 20,000 ft, then rapidly out-accelerated the F/18s. Yesterday- the US DoD officially released footage of the encounter. - r/military
UFOs!!!
I confess, I'm not too interested in aliens and UFOs and stuff. But I think my watchers might be. Also I trust the sources, so this is like one of the very few "legit" UFO sitings.

Oh, oh! I found a new word for interesting!! I think you might like this one~
"Didactic"
It means: designed or intended to teach people something.
Okay, well maybe that's not a synonym but like... I dunno. D i d a c t i c. Just throwing out a thing that piqued my interest, hehe
2. So I don't know if its because I'm young, or stupid, or what, but like... I've never heard of Lisa Frank? I'd probably maybe recognize her stickers but the name is unfamiliar. Honestly, reading through it reminded me of some things I've heard about KONAMI and their treatment of employees. Like they'd go out of their way to make sure anyone who left couldn't find work, or if they caught an employee saying something they didn't exactly like then they were shipped off to really horrible assignments with lower pay. I mean, I dunno if Japanese companies are generally super tight-laced, but... I still don't think these are good business practices. Personally, I'm not at all surprised someone who works with cute things is incredibly dark behind all that. But... maybe that's just my opinion.
Oh, this was around 2005? Well that explains. I was only like... um. Well. 8, I think. Yeah.
3. Sees top comments are now all about Beyblade. Nerds out.
Hehee... But, I mean. I never really figured they had super degrees and stuff like that. Maybe at my old library. But the one in my current town, its a really small thing thats just... I don't have much respect for it. I guess the workers there 'could' be degree holders, though... And I also have a Librarian friend. Haha, I am fairly sure she isn't a scholar but she's also in Sweden so. I dunno. Actually, I should ask if she has a bunch of degrees.... hm.
4. Oh boy. 40's tv? *buckles up. also skips to 1:50.*
Oh my god. I went into this like, oh no. Automotives. I'm an idiot. No good. But then that 40's narration kicked in and I'm now a learned. (MOAR SPOKES -- wait, gears? GEARS!!) I... I don't know why I, I mean. I know a thing now, I know differential steering but like. This is... ah. Well. Consider this a thing that's piqued my interest~
5. I couldn't read the 2nd link cuz so many ads started popping up. Even so. I was born in Kentucky. Left immediately, but we wound up coming back when I was seven since we're poor. Its pretty bad there. Not everywhere in KY, but all the places I saw where always dying and old-timey. Everyone in debt. The kids were... Anyway. I don't think we worried about exposed sewage though? I was in Alabama for a bit too, but I can't remember much about it. Exposed sewage... diseases... Honestly. There are some extremely poor places in South-East US.
6. This was difficult for me.... I've studied a lot of psychology, so I have thoughts, but reading this is a little strange. I mean. I just. I dunno about this...
8. I've never trusted Facebook. Never made an account either. But that, ah, might just be because... I dunno. A website meant for just socializing seems.. I don't know. I did a report examining partisan politics before. I'd speculated multiple parties might help, but I found that just usually leads to a drop in election polls, roughly speaking. I dunno how polar things were in the past for partisan US, but I know its disgusting now. I definitely think echo chambers are a serious influence, and that FB is a massive problem in its own right.
9. (0.0) Ooooh... Aaaaahh... I like amazon (window) shopping, so this is really cool! I usually just compare the worst/best reviews, and look for pics, tho. I actually tested these on some swaggy boots I got really cheap! And I got a Pass!! I mean. Yeah, the build quality is acceptable but not the best, which is what the program says and also something I can tell through wear, but..... I'm happy they're considered good boots overall. Especially that the programs also thinks my boots are stylish <3
10. I was looking forward to reading about how towns were founded, but those comments were all deleted...
11. What. The. Flig... this is crazy. I mean, it makes me feel much better about myself. I always feel like I do bad on interviews, I get really nervous... But. Holy hell. I've never said anything 'this bad.'
"I'm not actually here to interview, I just wanted practice for other companies' interviews."
Or. "Well last week I got arrested for domestic violence, on account of me biting my wife's fingers off for touching my face, you see."
....augh...
12. (@.@) Jillian... its aliens..

Again I am super sorry for the late reply. I am a horrible person. D:
New years resolution: Reply faster lol
2. You might be too young, to be honest! haha. Lisa Frank is like... A 90s thing, I guess. EVERYONE had these school supplies that were rainbow everything and cute animals and junk. They also had some pretty cool stories about the characters on the inside. They were basically somebody's OCs barfed on some stationery, but like, kid-friendly and cool. And rainbows.
Also: You're not surprised dark people are behind cute things? Why do you say that? It's surprising to me!
4. Good to hear! :)
5. Oh I have adblocker. I didn't realize. Dx
6. Same tbh
9. :)
10. There should be some that aren't deleted?

But yeah, I was a little sad that's all there was. Still cool info though.
