Please excuse my rabid fanboying, but the Tron Legacy trailer has me pretty hyped for it's release.
I was going to put this in the scraps folder since it's not really a cleaned up piece and it's full of flaws, but since there's enough work gone into it I think it deserves a gallery place. It took about 2 hours to do this one, which is pretty short for me.
Oh, sorry if it's a bit too dark. It seems I may need to recalibrate my monitor.
Can't wait for this movie! I wanna see it in IMAX :D

the nerd in me goes "YAY!" 8D and the filmmaker in me goes "NO!" D8
Superfluous use of time-manipulation slow-mo just sinks my hopes. Not to mention the sequel coming in the midst of a sea of remake mania capitalizing on pre-existing fanbases to make a buck.
/jaded film snobbery

I prefer to go with the nerd on this occasion. I get what you mean, but at the same time it kinda brings it up-to-date with modern film techniques and practices. I'm hoping that the slow-mo isn't used heavily, rather just enough to compliment any scenes such as anything needing a lot of 'processing power' (computer version of the high-adrenaline moments where the brain may be doing the same thing).
I do think that the visual style for it all is perfect though. I'd been wondering (and worrying) how they were going to bring something as vintage and distinctly retro into a more modern look, since it would be natural for everything to have changed along with the technologies of today. What they've gone with is certainly more up-to-date and clean looking, while still very clearly looking like Tron. That makes me happy :)
Still, it's not gonna be out for another year or so, so we'll have to wait and see how it all turns out. Either way, I'm going to go see it :)

I actually do give them credit for that. I was glad to see them keep that minimalist visual aesthetic from the originals. However, I don't consider slow motion necessary for fast action. It didn't become this huge of a trend until after the Matrix kicked it off and in that case there was a legitimate reason for it. The characters were manipulating the world like cheating in a video game. The manipulation made for a good visual interpretation of such. If they use it a lot in this remake, they COULD make a similar claim, though it doesn't seem to be the purpose judging from the trailer. AND considering the similarities of the situation to The Matrix, that's a really cheap rip off thing to do.
See, I try to give my viewers the benefit of the doubt in terms of intelligence and not spoon feed them anything when I make a film. The same goes for their processing power. Flashy action doesn't have to be done ONE way for a person to understand what's going on. Or for that matter, do they need to see every little intricacy? It depends on what's appropriate to tone and subject matter. Look at the original Tron. It didn't need the slow mo to provide clarity of high action scenes.
In other words, the new slow-mo obsession is to Hollywood what lense flare is to the online art community: it's a shiny, cheap, distraction to make you ooh and ah. I can even speed things up and slow them down on my little mac. It's not that amazing. Hell, even skatevideos used time manipulation for a number of years before the trend in Hollywood.
It accentuates the action and does make it clear, yes. But considering the plethora of ways to go about portraying action, you'd think they could take the precedence of the innovation the first film set and find their own stylistic method in their own way. But instead they resorted to the latest trend, which gives me further reason to suspect this isn't so much a revisiting and updating so much as a chance to bank on a lot of nerdy fans like us just wanting new product to fawn over.

hmm... interesting... If I may, can I ask you about your views on the new "Alice in Wonderland" Film by Burton. (btw, I totally agree with moviemakers just trying to go for the quick buck instead of creating movies that people might actually like. for example, The Taking of Pelham) *stopping there for fear of making himself sound like a fool*
I don't really know all that much about it, to be honest so I can't say anything. I'm a big fan of Burton's older films for what it's worth, but my opinionated rant above is mostly because of the trailer and criticizing the use of the effect rather than actually the film. Like thefunkyone said, I need to see the full thing.
Well I gotta agree with ya there, the effect certainly is somewhat overused in Hollywood. It should be used much more sparingly than it is these days, and only when it really benefits from it.
I'm willing to give the trailer the benefit of the doubt though. From what I know of it, this was essentially a technical demo of what the film and effects would look like, as well as a teaser trailer (same difference?). The three times it was used in the trailer serve their purpose in my eyes.
The first was basically showing off the construction and materialisation of the Light Cycles (hopefully done quicker every other time they appear). It's a pretty sweet technical scene for me since we get to see the underlying structure, and it plays on the whole electronic thing.
The second with the crash... well, it just looked cool. Kinda gives that "oh shit" moment.
The third with the disc may well be pointless, but at the same time I found it oddly interesting to see that it lit up in a circular motion. I dunno, maybe it's the tech geeky animator in me, but that just struck me as a cool little detail to show off.
Yeah all of it was pretty much just to show off the cool effects, but it's a trailer so I'll more inclinded to just forgive it. True that they could use the same reasoning as The Matrix for it all, but with Hollywood techniques as they are I think it'd fit anyway. It may be cheap, but at least in this case it works. Don't want them to overdo it though, that'd be annoying.

IIRC, the original TRON came out in the Eighties. I remember being indifferent about it then, too.
If they ever remake The Mutiny on the Bounty then I will know that Hollywood has lost all its imagination, especially since they never made the movie related to the Bounty that they should have: namely, a film biography of William Bligh. In addition to commanding the Bounty and directing a longboat from where the mutiny took place to Timor, he had earlier been ship's master of HM Sloop Resolution under James Cook, and would later serve under Horatio Nelson at the First Battle of Copenhagen, where he saw the conflicting signals of Admiral Parker and Vice-Admiral Nelson and continued Nelson's signal instead of Parker's. He then became Governor of New South Wales, where he was overthrown and arrested by mutineers in the Rum Rebellion.

I saw the thumbnail and I thought it was something to do with Ratchet and Clank - Can you blame me with all those funky suits of armor Ratchet is constantly clad in? haha. It's a great picture, displeased this is isn't about ratchet and clank but now I'm just being pedantic. xD
Still a favourite non-the-less. :)
I watched the trailer, it looks okay but it doesn't seem to have quite the same charm as the original Tron from the early 1980s. Given the current slurry of over-hyped and craptastic franchised films in recent years I won't be holding my breath for it. This new film will all be lights set to a thin story (and I've read the summary, it really is as thin as it gets) where the original was (then) cutting edge technology set to a good Sci-Fi story.
