Annabelle has never been a big fan of New Years Eve. Every single year she would spend the stroke of midnight all huddled up in her bed, hidden under a blanket while she did everything to block out the noises the fireworks made.
Listening to music through her headphones, eating potato chips, leaving the tv on, trying to focus on whatever's on it.... anything she could think of!
The loud whissles and explosions of the fireworks always startled her, and rang painfully in her sensitive ears even hours after they stopped. So New Years Eve was the only occasion she didn't care much for.
At least not until she got to spend it with her Alistair. She certainly didn't mind it as they decided to spend the night on their own. Just bundling up together on the couch with a box of chocolates, a bottle of champagne, and a half vegetarian, half grilled chicken pizza for them to share. Simply enjoying each other's company.
Soon she even forgot what day it was as she leaned her head on his shoulder, nuzzling against his throat as they watched the sun set through their living room window.
But when the sky turned from a rosy, golden sunset, to a deep, dark blue night, she was quickly reminded when the first premature firework was sent up into the sky by a couple of bored teens.
Its colorful blast lit up the sky once more, and the deafening bang made Anne jump. Her eyes widened as her claws instinctively dug into the blanket, her long ears pressing against her neck as her body trembled with the sudden surge of adrenaline. Ready to run and hide in case the first explosion was too soon followed up by another.
But her mind was calmed as she felt a pair of arms wrap around her and pull her closer to Alistair's chest. He loosened the hand gripping the sheets and held it carefully, his thumb stroking her knuckles as she squeezed his hand instead.
Used to her jumpiness, Alistair didn't say a word. He just held her and gently nuzzled her hair until she relaxed. His other hand gently carressed her shoulder and waist, and his calming, affectionate gestures eventually allowed Anne to relax enough to look out through the window.
As the night went on, and the fireworks more frequently blossomed on the sky, the loud crackling and explosions still made Anne jump, and she pressed one ear against Alistair's chest and covered the other to muffle the sounds.
Yet, she couldn't take her eyes off the sky. The show was spectacular as colorful, fiery flowers exploded on the pitch black night sky. Not even the stars were allowed to shine for long as the fireworks lit up the city.
She didn't even notice that she had raised her head from Alistair's chest and wrapped the arm around him instead until she felt him softly kiss one of her ears.
”Happy New Year, love” He whispered, his soft, Scottish accented voice cut through the constant crackling, and Anne smiled as she cuddled up on his lap.
She gave his hand another squeeze and tucked her head in under his chin, closing her eyes.
”Happy New Year” She returned with an affectionate coo, her ears still pressing against the back of her neck as the fireworks slowly died down as midnight passed, and a new year began.

Aw, this is just so sweet. I love the little story you wrote to go along with it. It's really well done and it adds so much to the scene and really makes the image it's linked with seem even better, I think. Though the art itself is simply gorgeous! I love cuddly poses and the way he's holding her so warmly and protectively against him. His muzzle resting on the top of her head and the look of peace and happiness they're both wearing just make this image so beautiful. The fireworks behind them are really nicely done, too. It's so nice to know that Anna was able to enjoy the fireworks despite her fear of them, and that Alistair was there to comfort her.
Happy New Year to you, and this is a great picture to help kick off 2018!
