"no way, kid."
"how come?"
Glimmer rolled her eyes, short fingers curling and uncurling around the smooth, polished stone in her pocket. this kid.
"because, you're a lop rabbit. your ears will hang until the day you die," she muttered, gait losing a pace as she bit her tongue. watch it, you're not on shift. Millie's so little. don't talk like that. she glanced back at the little brown bunny, who looked deep in thought. "it's... just your breed. you won't really grow into them."
Millie nodded, and Glimmer, satisfied their comment had gone unheeded, returned to their previous pace, fingers returning to their previous work. the pair briefly lapsed into silence.
"....hey, Glimmer?"
Glimmer groaned internally, closing her eyes for a moment. its too early for this. or too late. She had walked Millie to school every morning in the year the kid had been old enough to attend. it was only natural-- she stopped by Alma's shop each morning on the way home from work, and the school was only a slight detour from her path. a freshly-baked pastry always did her well after a long night, and the kid was usually more reserved. or at least had less questions.
"yeah?" they replied, wincing in the sunlight.
"my ma... says i'll be old enough to walk myself to school soon," Millie said slowly. they chewed at their lip and looked up at the feathered rabbit. "she says you're gonna get tired of walking me."
Glimmer rolled her eyes, imagining all too clearly the blonde cow's teasing. she should know by now, the kid's gonna take it to heart.
"you're not gonna get tired of me, right?"
Glimmer stopped short, feeling more than hearing Millie scuffling behind her at the sudden pause. Glimmer lifted her paw to her chest, pressing slightly as if to ease the squeezing around her heart. her other hand clutched tightly around the smooth stone in her pocket, the older rabbit smiled briefly, feeling much less tired and much more patient than shedid moments before.
"no," she said, clearing her throat. "no way, kid."
the pair returned to their original pace, lapsing again into a comfortable silence.
