That's an interesting thought too...
Perhaps people move towards psychology when they have something they want to understand about people and their minds.
I mean that's kind of a given but I mean a more personal thing.
e.g. Ripple's desire to understand people and communicate better or Amethyst's interest in -censored due to spoilers-

Hahaha, I almost feel like this is sort of Ripple having her own Data [from ST:TNG] Moment here.
It's actually pretty adorable how she's taking psych classes in order to actually understand people a bit better and communicate more, like you said above. But, also, how her fascination and adoration of Amethyst is actually helping to put some of that into actual practice and help give her comfort and experience in socializing with others that she actually needs. After all, it can't all just be theory and design.
I hope Amethyst takes good care in giving Ripple the social skills she just can't learn in class :3
