Well there are four Network-attached storage (NAS) units, under them are six external USB 3.0 hard disk's three of each are linked to the two top NAS units for extra hard disks, then there is the server, that is the older one now, in this photo it was an AMD FX-8350 CPU in a 990FXA chipset 2Tb WD Black HDD and 32Gb RAM, but that is now changing as we speak, the server is getting a bit of an update.
The lenovo there is a bit of a backup/admin box just to act as an NFS/SSH and some other things to NAS units and some other bits on the network, big fat UPS in the bottom of the rack and in the middle a netgear pro gigabite switch.
It's getting a bit out of date now days, looking at 10G network and some other bits........ and newer bigger disks as that rack of disks is more full than a foxies ass at a gang bang.

There are a number of really nice home made NAS kits you can build with some old PC gear, FreeNAS, Open Media Vault and UnRAID, mind you UnRAID you do need to pay for but it does some insane things.
For free I would say look at FreeNAS or Open Media Vault as both are good and some what simple, I would say Open Media Vault is more in some ways than FreeNAS, but I would say test them out and see what sits best with your likes and needs.
