There are few things more great in doing a webcomic than spending that extra 10-30+ minutes rendering ity bitty details in the background of your comic...only to have a text bubble completly bury them.
Granted the details arent' very good, they were all doing using the mouse and Photoshop directly rather than actually having anything drawn by hand. But I've been really trying to force myself into doing more background elements. I feel uneasy when there is nothing but panels of empty space. Unfortunately when the comic is back-to-back, the tempation to cut corners to conserve time is a big one.

So, is the cat-creature another Fae, or a Fae's companion like Pip seems to be? I think I see a faint grey blob where the antennae sparks would be, but I'm not quite sure.
As for the backgrounds, yes. I know exactly where you're coming from.
Sometimes with PF I've cut corners and gone "screw it, the speech bubble goes there" but far more often, I look at it and think "I spent ages shading Niall's jeans and now you can't see them because they won't fit..."

I'm a fan of making my dialogue balloons at a transparency of 67% (arbitrary number, I know, but it kinda stuck) to assist with a bit of the background details. Granted, in the comic above, it would have likely still obscured most of the details..
Neat to see the raw comic, though! :D

Hah. This pic kinda reminded me of those Garfield comics with the text removed. Those always made me giggle. But yeay behind-ze-scenes!
Could always do what Star Wars did. X0 years down the line say we always wanted big flashy backgrounds but where to poor and mostly lazy. Now we hired a bunch of animator guys to fill the empty space cause we're rich! You could re post the entire series marked as 'special edition' and make millions! ...
please don't do that.
