Seeing that I'm near-sighted, too, I have a great deal of sympathy for the Lady Benita Todhunter. Even if my eyesight isn't quite that bad, I do feel for situations where one doesn't have one's glasses, as things don't seem quite the way they are.
It's also apparent that more than one fur in the room may have feelings parallel to mine...
I have no doubts that at least a few of my readers will get the obscure joke in what Lady Benita was up to. Though unlike the original, she apparently had enough room for the proof.

I'm minded of a Sergio Aragones cartoon:
1) A nearsighted man wanders cheerfully through a pleasant landscape of lights and sparkles towards an eye doctor.
2) Exiting with new glasses, the man is shocked to see the landscape is all glaring neon and sex shop signs.
3) Discarding his glasses, the man wanders cheerfully off through his pleasant landscape...
