Meet Bumpy the Cyanobacteria!
Bumpy is the Ambassodor for his species - An advocate to promote a good reputation on them, and the advocate for how beneficial Cyanobacteria is to the environment.
Cyanobacteria can be found just about everywhere in the world - Even the arctic regions.
However, they are particularly abundant in Desert environments, such as the Mojave desert, Sonoran desert, and many other similar deserts.
Cyanobacteria is incredibly important to these biotypes, as they form Tough soil crusts that prevent the soil from running off during rain.
The bacteria secretes a sticky Mucilage around their cells that, when they move, leaves microscopic trails through the soil. This acts as a glue, sticking the soil together & hardening it.
without this, the soil would not be firm. The soil would be quite sandy & loose, and would move with every rain, every wind blow, and every footstep. This type of loose soil would not be so great for plants or animals to live in.
On top of this, the bacteria keeps the rain from drenching the soil terribly.
The bacteria absorbs 10x its capacity in water when it rains, and then after the rain, it slowly releases it into the soil over time, keeping the plants & such watered for a very long time.
This soil crust may not survive too much longer, however
Us humans walk on these crusts, and with every indention into the soil from our feet can cause tremendous damage to the environment; Bicycles & Cars are an even bigger problem in that sense, as the trail goes in a continuous strip.
It can take 1-5 years for the bacteria to rebuild the crust in that spot. Creating dents in the crust is a lot like removing blocks from a Jenga tower; one might not do anything, but the next might topple the entire game.
It's not worth the risk to the environment, it's a good idea to, when in those deserts biomes, just stick to the roads & trails. Do not go off into the wilderness where humans have not ventured.
Take a look at this link, it will tell you more than I could.
