Drawing pornography seems to be one of the only naturally means of gaining an audience as an artist.
It's essentially about appealing to the lizard part of our brains; catharsis, horror, security, and arousal. Include fan-art and you have a greater boost in relevance. Catharsis is the reason why drama is such a big part of the internet; Internet Bloodsports, exposed-videos, cringe-compilations etc. Security is something you mostly see with televangelism and conspiracy theories; it's a more obscure and vague thing to appeal to. Horror is obvious and even includes cringe-content; creepy-pasta, Let's Plays of Amnesia, etc.
And then there's arousal; why porn dominates the community. A more general audience side of that is parasocial-relationships (Majira Strawberry, Markiplier, etc); showing your relatively sexy face/body on camera. Hence why furry channels only really take off with a good fursuit or animated pictures of their characters. You notice this when Kothrix started filming his face, he was dropping in subscribers and everyone was complaining to bring the dragon back.
Within hours of starting a new account I was already up to 50+ favorites and 20+ followers for uploading porn. I'm still new and this remains my most viewed/favorited as of this time,; appealing to the fat/inflation fetish. Meanwhile my more respectable/public/legit works hardly get rewarded any attention..
I could be mad, but nobody really has the time to delve into content with greater depth. They have hundreds of subscriptions and content to sift through.
However, this is the major reason why you hardly see any other kinds of content in the furry community and possibly on the internet in general. There's very little incentive for people to create "non-lizard-brain content" as I call it. It's not that this content is bad, even if making pornography can be humiliating to the artist. It's just that the content has little depth; making it feel shallow/vapid. The whole thing can feel like a popularity contest, but there are many target audiences to appeal to. It's just that getting their attention requires you give them a reason to.
"non-lizard-brain content" would be things like tutorials, documentaries, and deeper/well-researched stores and simulations. Focus on principle, self-improvement, etc. These creations actually appeal to the lizard brain by having high production values, lots of action, fan-service, horror, drama, etc. But they're not primarily made for it; lizard-brain content is content made only for scratching the itch.
e.g. porn or cringe.
The best compromise I could think of for an artist building an audience, is to pick a stimulus our lizard-brains appeal to most. One you're comfortable with; these are your only options. Find a fandom that is both most popular and you feel naturally drawn to (Pokémon always works), and combine lizard-brain content with fanart (hence why Rule 34 became a thing so naturally).
Even when working for free, some form of value is still being traded. Your labor + time with your audience's interest + time.
This is how I eventually came to terms with the reality of being a content creator in any community or medium.
