What's a shagnard?

It is a small canine like species that live in packs. They hunt small prey like squirrels and mice but might go for a deer every once in awhile. They have tails that can curl up and can be used alike from a whip as a way to defend themselves.
Despite being very small and easy to hunt most predators avoid hunting them because some can have powers. They are believed to be the protectors of the forest. The forest they live in is protected by a magical barrier keeping humans and other dangers out. Legends say that a group of shagnards had created the barrier hundreds of years ago.
