He was once an innocent kobold. After being thrust into adventure by cosmic forces and confronted with death and fear, he remained optimistic. But this outcome wasn't good enough for the powers that be, who were aiming to recreate the ferocity they had spawned in their chosen kobolds in the past, and so those powers changed him into a monster, aiming to strip his innocence away.
In part, they succeeded. They did not, however, manage to make an emotionless, mindless husk of a warrior as they had in past attempts at manipulating fates. Instead, they created somebody well-rounded, with the power to be both a gentle giant and (as pictured) a fierce kobold—a being the likes of which had never existed before. They spawned a creature with the ability to fight the fate they had tried to impose, perhaps to their own detriment…
Bomba's Pathfinder campaign continues, and as I and other players

Quinn discover more about our characters' fates and the gods who attempt to steer the characters to such a destiny, we find key differences between ourselves and those in the gods' previous attempts at forcing the hands of mortals. For my character Lank here, previous versions of him were manipulated into being killed to protect another or into becoming mindless beasts of destruction when their innocence stood in the way of the gods' plan. The current one, however, has maintained his consciousness and become empowered to fight for his own ends, much as the rest of the players' characters have discovered strengths that push them to succeed where past versions of themselves failed.
