Chapter 1
“I just simply love the woods this time of year” I practically screamed as I ran through the trees excitedly, Feeling the crisp air on my skin through my insulated fur.
“Yeah, it's wonderful - but can you slow down a little?” exclaimed my hiking partner and mate Jackdeer as he labored behind me. All of my prancing down the hill made it hard for him to catch up to me because I am very swift and fast. You see I am a deer, but I am exceptionally fast for my species.
“You know if you slow down, I'm going to be forced to fly ahead and you are going to have to catch up to me” he hollered. I knew he was getting winded so I stopped running and walked at a slow pace. It's really neat to walk on two legs and be able to prance on all four as well. I do take advantage of that as much as I can. But again it's really not nice to leave people in the dust. Finally, he catches up with me and we walk together side-by-side.
“You know although I have wings which are rare for a deer because I'm half peryton.” Jackdeer smiled as he said this to me, with a soft expression in his eyes as he turned his head towards me. Then we both exploded in laughter looking at each other and walking ahead on the trail in the woods.
“I know, I know, but I simply can't wait to get to the cabin. Excuse me, our cabin.” We've been in this woods before, but recently we have bought a cabin for ourselves, as we had to stay there before. Recently our landlord put it up for sale, and we jumped on the opportunity to take it as our own. It's been our favorite spot for many years, Especially in this late fall, when the trees are bare but before the snow comes, it's our favorite time to stay in our small cabin in the woods.
“I can't believe it's finally ours, It seems like just yesterday we were staying for the first time. I can't believe it's been four years!” he said excitingly. After all, we finally have a place of our own, outside of our home in the busy college town we live in. It's really nice to take break the hustle and bustle of both of our lives and vacation here, in the middle of nowhere.
As we walk along the path, his hoof reaches out and grabs mine, and before I knew it we are holding hooves together. We normally don't do any public displays of affection, but here in the forest where no one will see us, it doesn't matter. We won't be weirding people out here or being overly obnoxious. The display of affection is really nice, and once I can I turn my head towards him, my eyes off of the path ahead, and kiss him on the cheek. He smiles still looking ahead. We don't always need words to communicate, and it's beautiful that way.
You see, we are not your typical couple. I am transgender, as I was born female but I identify as a male, Jackdeer is a male through and through. So being both male in our union, it's not of the norm. But it doesn't matter, And most of the world is accepting of this anyways. Times have really changed for LGBT rights. and luckily the town that we live in is unapologetically accepting. But again, it's nice to be alone, Just the two of us, and forget society and its rules.
Finally, the path ends, and we arrive at the cabin. A beautiful log cabin, it's in really good shape and quite beautiful. It is a small one-room cabin, but it's enough to fit a fireplace, a living space around it, a sink and kitchen area beside the window, and a bed all the way in the back behind a few curtains. As we reach the door, I see the familiar evergreen wreath that we had made out of the materials around the cabin the previous year, hanging on the door. Being a gentleman, Jackdeer steps before me and opens the door, gesturing me to come in. He's such a fine young man of a stag, and I love that about him. I walked inside before him as he follows behind and shuts the door. We're greeted by a warm fire and our beautiful home glistening before us. It's clear that our landlord had been here just before us to start the fire and make it a nice getaway for the both of us. After all, she did know that we were moving today and it was quite nice of her to set up like this.
In addition to the fire, we also can hear the hum of our generator. You see the unique thing about Jackdeer is that he is half a peryton and half a regular deer. This means he possesses magic and is able to use it when needed. A while back he installed a magic generator underneath the cabin (with permission from our landlord of course) and was able to get a power generator that would last one thousand years working, with the magic of his hoof. This made it possible for us to have Wi-Fi, many outlets in the cabin that could power things, Christmas lights, computers, phones, and even a small microwave that we used to cook food sometimes. We even have hot water thanks to the magic. He also had the smart idea to put it underground in case of thunderstorms or other weather. This remote small log cabin still has many luxuries of the modern world.
Walking past the fire, I sit down in my very comfortable armchair that furnishes our cabin. I take in the sight of our small cabin, Christmas lights of various colors adorning the top of our walls by the ceiling, the roaring fire underneath the mantle where a TV hangs, and the two windows on either side that are showing the day is slowly fading into sunset. Jackdeer turns to me and smiles.
“Do you want some tea? I know how much you love it,” he spoke cheerfully in my direction. My response, of course, was positive, and he started making our favorite: vanilla and maple tea. Jackdeer carefully poured hot water in each of the mugs, from the drawer under the microwave next to the sink, he put teabags in each of the mugs, and brought one me and set the other on the coffee table. He then sat down as I looked at my tea bag in my mug submerged in the soon-to-be-wonderfully-flavored water.
“How do you know I always love tea?” I asked him taking a sip from the mug and then carefully putting it down on our coffee table, made from polished raw wood that we cut down. He put his hoof on mine and we proceeded to converse about how much we love each other while drinking our tea. When we were finished he turned to me with a smirk on his face. I know he had something good coming.
“I have a surprise for you.“ he gleefully stated, then turned toward me and kissed me. I was excited to see where this was going…
