Downside of engines on wingtips, is that failure of one leads to a severe asymmetrical thrust vs drag situation with the remaining engine, that usually results in a fatal spin. The Osprey gets around this theoretically by an over complex transmission that allows either engine to run both rotors in the event of a single engine failure. There is no survivable outcome in a double engine failure in an Osprey in vertical or transitional flight. Rotors don't store enough energy to make an autorotation that is less than 3000fpm descent rate.
