“Ughhh...I’m so hungry!”
I heard Itay sigh behind me as we walked into the buffet. When we got to a table, Itay didn’t even bother to sit down but went straight to the buffet tables and grabbed a plate.
When I got up to the table, Itay was filling his plate with chicken and rice while talking to a German Shepherd with peach-colored fur. The two seemed to argue a bit before they both began to pile even more food onto their plates until they each had a small mountain of grub.
I put some steamed broccoli and a few bits of chicken on my plate before I headed back to our table. Itay was there, sitting across from the German Shepherd he’d met at the buffet tables. The canine had sleek black hair and wore red slacks and a gray turtleneck sweater that looked a bit snug around his pudgy middle.
“Heather, this is Sonny. He thinks he can eat more than me.” Itay snickered as I sat down next to him.
“I know I can eat more than you, fuzz-face.” Sonny snarled as he picked up his fork.
Itay pinched a slab of chicken between his claws and stuffed it into his maw before Sonny could take a bite of his sushi. “This is my girlfriend, Heather, by the way.” He told him with his mouth full.
“Didn’t your mum teach you not to talk with your mouth full?! Yeesh.” Sonny snapped. He rolled his eyes to the ceiling before glancing across the table at me. “Your girlfriend, huh? She looks like she could be your niece. How old are you, twig? Twelve?”
I pursed my lips and flattened my ears against my skull, resisting the urge to growl. I didn’t want to make it any more obvious I was sensitive about my height and baby face.
“I’m twenty.” I replied curtly before I lowered my head and bit into a piece of broccoli. Stay calm, there’s gotta be a reason he’s acting so blunt. What was that one lesson in psych…?
I heard Sonny muttering to himself under his breath as he polished off the food on his plate. While I picked through my small meal, the boys got up and refilled their own plates.
When they came back and sat down, I took a piece of sushi off Itay’s plate and fed it to him, kissing him on the cheek as he cooed in bliss.
“Oh, get a room!” Sonny spat.
Itay held up his paws in surrender as he chewed on another piece of sushi, a piece of salmon dangling from his lips. “Dude, chill.”
“Jesus, you wanna wake up all of Tokyo with your noisy chewing?”
“I’m not chewing that loud!”
Sonny grunted around a mouthful of mandarin orange.
The boys ate in silence for a few blissful moments. Itay gobbled up a stack of sushi and some egg rolls while Sonny ate pot stickers and chow mein.
“I ate more sushi than you.” Sonny gloated after a while.
Itay shook his head. “Nuh uh! I had like ten pieces!”
“Oh? I couldn’t keep track as you were shoving them into your mouth two at a time! Where are your manners? You eat like a pig.”
“So? I like to eat. At least I don’t-”
“It would be nice if you guys would quit bickering!” I butted in, raising my voice above theirs.
“Can it, twig!” Sonny’s brown eyes flashed as he munched on a noodle. He swallowed it down and quietly surveyed us before continuing. “I bet you’re the one who turned your guy into a walking garbage disposal! Disgusting.”
Itay uttered a low warning growl under his breath. “Say what you want about me, but if you say one more thing about Heather, I’ll-”
“You’ll what? Eat me? Ha!” Sonny sniggered. “Why go around with a porker like him, huh? C’mon, a fox like herself could do better. Way better than this.” He nodded his head in Itay’s direction.
Itay’s tail drooped between us and I hurriedly rubbed his knee to comfort him as he gave me a look like an injured puppy. Sonny had obviously hit a nerve.
“Because I love him.” I quickly stammered a reply. “Someday we’re going to get married.”
The expression on Itay’s muzzle brightened considerably, but Sonny only averted his eyes as his expression darkened. Before the tension could rise any further, Itay got up to grab another plate and was followed, almost reluctantly, by Sonny. By the time they started on a round of desserts a little while later, they were both moving significantly slower.
Itay returned to the table with two plates full of brownies, ice cream, and chocolate chip cookies. Looking content and happy, he hadn’t even bothered to untuck his button down shirt, which was clinging tightly to his growing stomach and stretching dangerously at the seams.
Sonny, on the other hand, was looking slightly uncomfortable in his sweater, which was now even more snug around his belly.
“What’re you staring at?” He grumbled.
I quickly looked down at my empty plate but continued to watch them out of the corner of my eye as the not-so-subtle eating contest continued. Itay gulped down a pile of cookies like they were nothing while Sonny seemed to be struggling to finish a brownie with powdered sugar on top.
After a while, Itay pushed aside his empty plates and sighed. “I think I’ll get...hic...one more.” He hefted himself up and walked back up to the buffet tables to grab another plate, stumbling drunkenly as he went.
“Another one?” Sonny muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.
-
It was obvious Itay was feeling rather full after he finished his last plate of desserts. He was blinking sleepily and his breathing had become labored as he was lovingly patting his bloated belly.
When he leaned back in his seat, I took it as my cue to start rubbing his tight belly as he let out a few rich burps.
“P-pipe down.” Sonny murmured, without the usual scorn in his voice. I noticed he was looking even more uncomfortable than before, tugging on the hem of his sweater and shifting in his seat. When I wasn’t looking, I heard him burp quietly.
I glanced up at the canine and was surprised to find him red-faced and looking anxious. Another, louder belch escaped his lips and he apologized profusely, blushing darkly behind his black glasses.
“It’s okay.” I told him with a small smile. I returned my attention to Itay and started rubbing his soft tummy over his tight blue button down. I licked his muzzle affectionately and earned a rumble of delight from the lion as his tail flicked lazily back and forth.
Sonny glanced first at me, then at Itay, a look of unmistakable envy blazing in his eyes. “Hey...why don’t I get some of that? I’m feelin’ pretty full, too.” He sighed and hung his head. “At least you two can stand each other…”
I looked up at Sonny, with his drooping ears and dejected expression, silently urging him to explain.
Sonny started to say something, stumbling over his words a few times before blurting out -
“What I said earlier, I d-didn’t mean it. You two look so happy together, it’s obvious you were meant for each other. I...I’m sorry, I was just a little jealous.” He twisted the golden heart locket pendant on his necklace. “Okay, really jealous. I was just pissed. I fought with my wife earlier...she told me to fuck off a-and, well, I came here to get my mind off things…”
I furrowed my brow when I glanced up and saw Sonny’s eyes were looking misty.
“I...I ain’t crying! Someone behind us is eating onions, I swear! I’m just...ow…” Sonny winced and held a paw to his belly. “God, my stomach hurts. I ate way too much! You win, Itay, alright? I’ve been in too much pain I couldn’t keep going.”
Judging by the taut expression on his muzzle, he had one hell of a tummy ache. If he was embarrassed to burp, he must have been trying to hold them in, which no doubt made the pain worse or had even caused it. The twinge of sympathy I felt earlier had certainly grown considerably. I really take it to heart when someone opens up to me. I looked at Sonny nursing his aching stomach before I glanced up at Itay, a question forming on my lips.
Before I could get a word out, he smiled softly and nodded.
“I know what you want to do...you can, as long as you give me lots more tummy rubs when we get home.”
“I will!”
Thanking him with a kiss on the nose, I slid out of our side of the booth and sat down next to Sonny on the opposite side.
Sonny sat rigid and eyeing me suspiciously. “Don’t tell me you’re gonna do what I think you’re gonna do, kid.” He muttered.
“Hey, I’m just trying to help. I can tell you’re in a lot of pain, and if you don’t let out some more burps soon, it’s going to get worse.” I reached out and tried to place my paw on his tummy.
Sonny blocked my paw with his arm. “N-no, don’t...I deserve this stomachache.”
I waited a moment before I made another attempt.
“Please stop...I treated you so terribly, you gotta let my pain continue.” He hugged his stomach to cover it, but I managed to place my paw on the top of his belly.
“For the last fucking time, don’t-!” Sonny’s expression softened when I rubbed at his bloated stomach. “Ohh…” His arms relaxed at his sides to expose his stomach.
I rubbed a few gentle circles over the top of his tummy.
“Shit, that actually feels p-pretty good…” The canine’s muscles relaxed beneath my paw as I softly massaged the left side of his stomach. “Yeah...right there is good...ahhh…”
I nodded in encouragement when he let out a few burps, although he still blushed furiously after each one. I kept rubbing Sonny’s tummy in circles and arcs until he stopped fidgeting in pain and leaned back comfortably in his seat. “Do you feel better now?”
“Y-yeah, it doesn’t hurt so much anymore...I don’t deserve your sympathy, but...thanks, anyway.”
“Shoosh - it was no trouble! I don’t know if you can tell, but I’ve been coined the mother of my friend group. I've been told I have healing paws.” I sniggered. “Lemme know if you need more, okay?” I got up and sat back down next to Itay, who immediately took my paw and pressed it into his own round belly.
“Look, I’m really sorry if I offended you two, it’s really hard for me to control my rage sometimes, and today’s been pretty rough…” Sonny admitted.
I looked up at him. “I understand. You didn’t offend me, don’t worry about it.”
“Really? I thought for sure the first impression would be enough for you two to hate me…”
“Nah man, we cool, we cool.” Itay gave him the thumbs up with slightly wobbly arms. He then let out a burp and let his paws fall into his lap. Eating so much food must have made him feel drowsy.
I giggled and nuzzled the lion’s shoulder.
“Well, I would leave you two alone but...I can't.” Sonny tried to scoot out of the booth but couldn't. “I'm too full to get up! That and I’m in no rush...I ain't got a place to stay tonight. I forgot my wallet at home, all I had with me was enough cash in my pocket to pay for dinner.”
“Well...would you like to stay overnight at our place?” I offered. “We have a guest room and you're more than welcome to spend the night.”
“R-really? No, I couldn't possibly impose on you any further…”
Itay shrugged. “It's fine with me.”
Sonny gave a small smile. “If you insist…”
-
At home, I fixed some hot cocoa and the three of us sat down at the dining room table to drink it. We talked for a few hours, then watched a movie until it was time for bed.
“Alright, Sonny, I'll go set up the guest room for you. If you need anything at all, just let us know.” I said as we all stood up.
Sonny extended his paw for Itay to shake. “Thanks for letting me stay tonight, you're both too kind.”
“Sure, man.” Itay pulled him in for a hug, and I saw Sonny give a closed-eye smile over Itay's shoulder.
Sonny stepped back and shyly held his arms out again.
I stepped forward and gave him a hug as well. Itay and I are huggers for sure, and by the looks of it, Sonny was too.
Afterward, I set up our guest room with fresh sheets and blankets and placed another cup of cocoa on the bedside table.
Sonny stepped in and thanked me again before I headed back out into the hallway.
“Sleep well!” I called before he closed the door. After that, I climbed into bed with Itay and, as promised, gave him lots of tummy rubs until we both fell asleep.
“Ughhh...I’m so hungry!”
I heard Itay sigh behind me as we walked into the buffet. When we got to a table, Itay didn’t even bother to sit down but went straight to the buffet tables and grabbed a plate.
