It is well known that every Neferti is meticulously taught to dance as part of their cultivation. in their time, they learn the steps and poise for every dance spanning the galaxy, and are often a drawing feature of many festivities and celebrations. Sadly, like so many things in the life of a Neferti, this regimen strangles any joy they might find in the deed. In the end, they are like automatons - Beautiful, functional, and the envy of all who do not possess them, but behind the mask they have no passion.
There are rare occasions, however, when this does not hold true. Now and then, a Neferti takes the stage who breathes life back into the dance, and who makes it their own. Perhaps the average viewer would not know or understand the difference, but the energy and passion these few bring to the stage uplift it from methodical replication to a true art. The first time I saw this was at the Baron Laetus' home, when his consul set my heart afire. She expressed such a deep love that night that I fear the poor Baroness will never truly have her husband's heart. Such is the tragedy of nobility, I suppose, and I thank the fortunes that my beloved and my wife are one and the same.
Tonight, for the second time in my life, I was graced by such a performance - a young sand cat with strange eyes, who took the festival stage and for a brief time, made it his own. Once more, I feel my heart has caught fire, and I am tempted to do a little jig myself with every step! Every motion pulled at my heart, just as the Laetus' Neferti had, but there was one crucial difference. It is a difference that perplexes me, as I did not think the Neferti capable of understanding it.
The boy's dance was one of freedom."
