As someone who was raised Catholic (but is now agnostic), I can confirm that there can be wall-mounted sculptures of a crucified Jesus in church, and they can be painted.

For some extra notes, in the church I went to, there were reliefs of what happened to Jesus Christ from the time Pontius Pilate sentenced him to when he was placed in his tomb. Oddly enough, there were no reliefs of his betrayal or his resurrection.

Yeah. That's one of the minor beefs that us Lutherans (and other Protestant branches) have with Catholocism. Too much emphasis on his suffering and death, not enough on his resurrection.
