The thing is, if thete wasn't still people falling for this, then the people behind these scams wouldn't be doing ot anymore. It costs them maybe half a cent to send out 5 million emails daily, if only one person out of literally millions falls for this, they already make profit.
My elderly neighbors have fallen for this kind of thing multiple times. Once a phone scammer who said "this is your grandson, I'm in Mexico and in trouble and need you to wire me money to get home" (the grandson lives next door to them, 2 minutes could have verified the story). Then they got one of those ads that tells you you have a virus and to send money to buy an antivirus and remove it, so they did.
