Bushido is well known as a belief that the Samurai held up as their form of Knight’s Chivalry, a behavior to aim to hold in their dealings with others and with themselves. Bushido has been a code that has grown into a philosophy throughout the passage of time and the growth of the country of Japan. One of the most famous capturers of the code of Bushido, Nitobe Inazō, abridged the ideas and feelings of Bushido into eight virtues that makes it easier to understand and for the ideas to spread.
Righteousness
Being honest with yourself and others, looking for justice and integrity in yourself.
Heroic Courage
Living life completely, fully and wonderfully. Showing courage and not hiding away from the world.
Benevolence
Help your fellows when the opportunity arises, develop your power for good and grow your compassion.
Respect
Warriors do not need to prove their strength or be respected for it, but show their respect in their dealings with others.
Integrity
When warriors say they will perform an action it is as good as done, speaking and doing are the same action.
Honour
You cannot hide from yourself, decisions they make and carry out reflect who they truly are.
Duty and Loyalty
They are loyal to all of the people in their care and are responsible for everything they have done and everything that they will do.
Self – Control
Warriors need to learn to control their emotions and desires when needed to not let them cloud their judgement.
