Imperials are the result of selective breeding, and often have very vibrant patterns and rich coloration, and have distinctive patterns (such as neck bands, forehead stars, ect) through genetic lines. This is different than the common star dragon, in that the common variety is born pure white and gains color according to where they live and the minerals they consume; imperials are born with their colors already imprinted.
At 50-500 ft long, they cannot grow to massive size in space, and families tend to stay on the planets they settle on for millions of years, defending a ruling culture from the hunger of their relatives.
Imperial star dragons descended directly from common star dragons, and they can cross breed; this is rare though, as the species are often in conflict for resources.
Imperials are known to become overweight more often than other kinds, due to a more sedentary lifestyle. They are vicious fighters though, and will do whatever they can to defend their planets; they're often eaten alive by common star dragons.
They are fully furred, unlike terrestrial star dragons, and rarely have to hunt for food as they tend to be provided upon by the beings they defend. It is common to see them living in large shrines, taking on spiritual roles.
