Robbie is having a day of ups and downs and unfortunately sticking his foot in his mouth. Just like so many teenage boys....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Common Robbie, I'm serious," Hiroshi McLoude said to his older brother Robbie. "Just try out you never know."
"You're the performer of the family Hiroshi," Robbie returned munching on the school lunch and wishing he'd remembered to bring a few dollars for an off-campus lunch. The cafeteria food wasn't really bad but he had really wanted something other than the rather bland 'school pizza' he was dining on today. "You'd win the role easy."
Hiroshi smiled brightly at his brother. He had been doing a lot more of that recently the older brother thought approvingly. Robbie still didn't know exactly how things had been resolved and Moms were still pissed as hell but Hiroshi wasn't the quiet almost skittish brother he'd been for months. It was good to have the smile back. "I've already got my part, I'm playing Sebastian. Ms. Koletti decided 'Under the Sea' would be a perfect place to add a dance number. Besides," Hiroshi flushed. "I was Prince Adam in the fall musical anyway."
Robbie snorted. "You expect me to sing?"
"Oh common, I've heard you, both you and Tim. We share a bathroom!" Robbie coughed a bit on his food and Hiroshi smirked. "You can't be our mothers' kids without having something of a singing voice."
Well, Ototo had him there. Mama Dana, Meemee to most the kids, had her first starring role in a musical though her main role had been an evening drama show for several years. Mama Krystal or just 'mama' had the real voice of the two Meemee always said. She had even competed in music challenges and recorded a cover record when in college to help fund her premed degree.
All of the kids had inherited some bits of talent, and Robbie had a halfway decent tenor he thought, nothing special like his brother but he could carry a tune.
But trying out for a part in the school musical? He snorted at his brother. "I thought some of Tim's ideas were crazy. Ototo I'm a jock. I mean yeah I know stereotype and all but I kind'a live up to a lot of it."
Hiroshi gave one of his smiles. The ones that just made you want to ruffle the ears or want to make him happy. Robbie and Tim had often wondered how much their baby brother realized how everyone absolutely adored him. Granted part of the reason why everyone loved the little guy was because he was so kind and caring with everyone even the jerks that seemed to want to tear that personality down.
"Payphone," Hiroshi said simply and Robbie spluttered the milk he was drinking.
"Wh...what?"
Hiroshi handed over a napkin looking up and that smile brightened even more as Nari walked up her McLaren leather jacket hiding most of her school uniform her tie off kilter. Robbie blinked and then turned back as Hiroshi slid over the cookie that had come with his school lunch. "You heard me and just tell Jackie when you go in for the audition to cue up track four on the system she has the acompaniament version ready to go." With that his brother stood up and snuggled up against the taller leopardess walking away.
Robbie just shook his head then looked at the time and stuffed the cooking in his muzzle and jumping up. He had Mr. Price next period and the tall broad shouldered former marine that now taught algebra was none-too-impressed with the young canine. Some of it he was sure was because da had been horror upon horror Air Force before he had retired early to become civilian test pilot.
He hiked his backpack over his shoulder and bounced off down the hall. The school was in the middle of preparing for the fall arts festivals, just as big if not a bigger deal than sports were at some other schools and the halls were a bit more crowded than normal with the pale blue and navy uniforms of students. The thin athletic mix used his skills as a receiver and soccer forward to navigate the crowd.
He smiled and got a little cocky as he looked at the clock and then the fact that he was only a couple feet from Mr. Price's room and had a good two minutes to spare. That of course was when he went tumbling as he crashed into someone. He heard a yelp but with his mouth full of cookie and one hand filled with books the best he could do was use his free hand to flip himself over whoever he had just tackled.
"Watch where yer goin' you bludy stook!" a soprano voice called out in an accent that was… similar to the one his mothers got when they got really angry but not quite.
Robbie blinked scrambling back to his feet and looked down seeing a black, gray and white furred canine girl with tuliped ears black and long white-streaked gray hair with brown eyes that looked, well they looked pissed.
"Um… sorry? Uh…" he didn't recognize her. She was about as tall as his kid sister Mia.
"Wicken," she replied angrily getting herself up before he had a chance to; her accent getting thicker. "Why don' you watch war yer goin'?"
"Um… I kind'a was," he responded feeling a bit defensive as Mr. Price appeared at the door crossing his massive arms over an equally massive chest.
"Obviously not," she replied angrily. "Or else you great brute wouldn't have bowled me over!"
"Ok maybe I wasn't paying attention to what was below me," Robbie responded and immediately regretted it.
The girl, Wicken and what sort of name was Wicken? he thought straightened to her full height, which admittedly wasn't that much compared to the tall lanky spitz-mix. "And just who are you you high and mighty…"
"Miss O Faolain? Mr. McLoude?" the rumbling voice of Mr. Price announced as the bell went off and Robbie realized not only was his teacher supremely unimpressed with his performance but the girl, Wicken? Was in at least his geometry class.
Well this day was just getting more and more entertaining by the moment he thought as the smaller female glared angrily at him with those piercing brown eyes.
"Sorry Mr. Price…."
"I'm not the one you should apologize to Son," the tiger rumbled and nodded.
Robbie winced and sighed. He'd already apologized for ramming her but that wasn't what Mr. Price wanted and his teacher had a point he had been rude. "Sorry for mouthing off at you, I was frustrated."
"Well that is not…" She began but Mr. Price coughed slightly. Say what you will about the tiger, he was fair. "Apology accepted."
"Good, now the two of you should come in, and fill out your tardy reports. We have a test thursday…"
Oh yeah Robbie thought, this was turning out to be a really good day.
"Hey Robbie!!!" an energetic voice called out and the canine blinked seeing the skinny perky ferret standing next to a bunch of audio equipment and what looked like a laptop connected to of all things an old-fashioned magnetic tape cassette player. He was pretty good with computers, but most the stuff the ferret was fiddling with looked like something that came off one of the jets Da flew.
"Um, hey Jackie," he returned letting his bag just thump next to the pile of electronic equipment. "Hiroshi said I need to talk to you?"
The ferret laughed. "No you need to talk to Ms. Koletti. I'm just running the sound system, you know that! Ro told me the track to queue up. Don't worry!"
Robbie nodded and shrugged. He could still just turn around and leave. It wasn't like anyone really expected him to do this. Still Hiroshi said he would be pretty good...
"Ah Robert," the voice of the drama teacher called out. Robbie smiled and waved at vixen as she stared at him over the old-fashioned reading glasses. He always found it odd, he knew Rosarria Koletti was actually younger than his parents and if she took those glasses off she'd actually probably be able to pass for a senior or a college first year. He always wondered why she insisted on the things that made her look older.
"Well, let's see if your brother's praise is well founded Robbie, you're improv please?"
"My Improv?" Robbie asked then kicked himself mentally. The signs had said that part of the tryout requirements was a short improvisation routine as well as a singing tryout. Hiroshi probably didn't mention it because all of the signs had been so obvious. Then he got an idea… "No one said a thing about improv..." he smiled at the teacher and the panel of others that were apparently judging including the choral director and a couple other teachers. He kind'a hoped they realized he was using it as his improv because he thought he sold the whole indignant rant pretty well. It probably helped that it was different from his normal more mellow personality. When he finished he couldn't help but feel a little red in his cheeks.
"Very good Robbie, now your song?" The choral director said without looking up. It wasn't cruel or unkind, simply brusque. He was actually glad he didn't seem to need Robbie to acknowledge him. The teen couldn't even remember his name he'd paid so little attention.
He nodded looking at the small microphone setup. Part of him wondered why that was there but Jackie gave him a big double thumbs up and he took a deep breath.
"I'm at a payphone..." he began and the music started up right with him like it was suppose to. He admitted he was rather nervous but as the song continued on he settled and without realizing it did what Hiroshi called 'leaning into the performance' starting to get carried away. He even did the rap portion of the song he normally didn't like, afterwards completely grateful that he remembered to sing the cleaned up version.
He panted looking up, was he actually sweating? Wow. He looked at the teachers and Ms Koletti was talking to the choral director, and who was the other teacher? Were in conversation and then Ms. Koletti turned. "Well, we found our Ariel and Eric on one day, very well done Mr. McLoude, you have the part."
He blinked. "Wait... What?" He had expecting to be a bit part, maybe one of the background singers but... "Eric?"
"Yes your voice is the correct range," the choral director responded rather matter of factly.
"And you can pull off the slight arrogance a nobleman needs," the other teacher said with a smirk. "And you know how to be and act a leader on the soccer field."
Ms Koletti continued to smile at him. "Exactly what we're looking for in Eric, brash but caring. I think it should be natural to you."
Robbie just gawked at them for a moment and then shrugged. "Sure, um if you want me."
"Practices start friday at five after school." the choral director responded, "our Ariel is rather new to school so why don't you help her out."
"Sure," Robbie returned and turned to see a newly familiar black, gray and white furred canine arms crossed over her chest brown eyes like the lasers from his and Tim's science fiction books.
"Robbie, say hello to your Ariel, Wicken O Faolain."
