It escaped the director's notice, but in the book, the Battle at Helms Deep was significant because Gandalf realized Souron did NOT know where the Ring was, and advised the King amass his forces there to give off the false impression that he had the Ring. (forgive me for not getting the names straight, I'm in a rush.)

Basically, having Frodo flaunt the Ring made the subsequent battle in the movie pointless.
